Men’s Basketball Edges Oberlin for First Victory of the Season

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team won its first game of the season edging out Oberlin College, 64-58, at Speidel Gymnasium on Thursday afternoon. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 1-10, while the loss drops the Yeomen to 4-7.

In the beginning the Yeomen got off to a quick start going on a 10-2 run for the first eight minutes. EC fought back to take the lead with 11 minutes left with Chris Cassidy '14 and Derrick Vogel '14 leading the way. After two quick lead changes EC went on top with 8:42 left in the half and stretched out its lead to as many as six points.

Oberlin came fighting back eventually taking a one point lead with 2:24 left in the half. However, EC came right back to eventually go up 34-31 leading into halftime. Cassidy and Vogel were key leaders for the Soaring Eagles in the first half combining for 24 of the team's 34 points.

The second half would continue to be a battle with Oberlin taking control of the tempo early, but EC bringing it back within a couple points. The Yeomen were able to take the lead within the first two minutes of the second half and eventually take a 47-40 lead. Elmira fought back and took the lead 54-52 with 5:15 left in play when Matt Newell '14 made a deep three. EC stretched out its lead to as many as eight points and eventually held on for the victory.
   
Cassidy and Vogel led EC in scoring with 23 and 16 points each, respectively. Cassidy also added seven boards and three steals, while Vogel added four steals and two assists. EC was able to dominate Oberlin in points off turnovers (24-6), bench points (19-0) and points in the paint (32-28). 

The Soaring Eagles will return to action next Tuesday, January 8 when they travel to Alfred University for the first conference games in the New Year. Game is set to start at 8:00 p.m.
