Two Third Period Goals Lifts the Men’s Ice Hockey Team to a 4-3 Victory

The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (6-5-0, 4-2-0 ECAC West) picked up a 4-3 win over Fitchburg State (4-6-0, 3-2-2 SUNYAC). Eric David '15 and Alexander Taulien '17 scored both third period goals to ensure the Purple and Gold win.

After both teams would find themselves unsuccessful off of two power play opportunities apiece, Fitchburg would find the back of the net first with just 2:16 second left in the first period. Elmira outshot Fitchburg 10-8 at the end of the first.

The Soaring Eagles responded back just 4:18 seconds into the second period as Tommy Sumi '16 and Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 set up the goal by Michael Collins '16. Just four minutes later the Purple and Goal would take the lead after Brian Depp '16 slipped one past the Falcons netminder with Jesper Strale '14 and Taulien credited with the assists. Fitchburg would tie the game back up 4:15 left in the period. Elmira would once again get the advantage with shots in the period as they outshot the Falcons 10-5.

18 seconds into the third period the Soaring Eagles would put the go-ahead goal on the board when David received a pass from Sumi and put the puck behind the Falcons goaltender. With 3:57 seconds left in regulation Taulien scored a goal on the man-up opportunity after getting the puck from ten Vaanholt and Dylan Herold '14. With just 1:17 left in the game Fitchburg scored a power play goal to try and mount a comeback, but would run out of time as Elmira would close out the game with the win.  The EC men outshot Fitchburg 16-12 in the third period and finished the night with the 36-25 advantage.

Ryan deMelo '15 made his season debut today and picked up his first win of the season after stopping 22 shots in the victory.

This game marked the last game of the year for the Soring Eagles as they will go on a break before facing Fredonia State on January 7, 2014. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
