Men’s Basketball Struggles Offensively in Loss to No. 25 Ducks

Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team struggled offensively as it fell on the road to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology, 59-46, Friday evening in Hoboken. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 6-16 overall and 3-8 in Empire 8 play, while the win improves the No. 25 Ducks to 19-3 and 9-2.

Elmira got out to a quick 4-0 start behind a Kurt Dutcher '14 jumper and Chris Cassidy '14 lay-in. However, the Ducks responded with a 16-3 spurt to open up a 16-7 advantage eight minutes in. The Soaring Eagles trimmed the deficit to five but Stevens took a 24-15 advantage into intermission.

The Ducks used a quick 6-0 run out of break that included two Patrick Sabatino baskets inside to open up a 15 point lead. Stevens extended that lead by breaking open a 26 point lead at 44-18 midway through the second half. The Soaring Eagles only basket in the first 11:00 minutes of clock time in the second half came on a Neil Randolph '15 trey.

Stevens extended its lead to as many as 32 with just less than six minutes remaining and cruised to the 59-46 victory. The Ducks shot 48 percent from the floor and 44 percent from long distance in the contest.

Elmira held advantages in points off turnovers (20-12), second chance points (15-4) and bench points (24-14). Cassidy led the Purple and Gold with eight points and 10 rebounds, while Dutcher added seven points.

Sabatino paced the Ducks with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, while Russ Thompson added a game-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds.

The Men's Basketball team returns to action Saturday when it travels to take on Hartwick College starting at 6:00 p.m.
