College Hockey Box ScorePine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team (4-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC West) continued to show how lethal their offensive attack can be as they cruised to an 8-1 win over visiting SUNY Cortland (2-4-0, 1-3-0 ECAC West). Elmira's eight goal performance gives them 27 on the season for a 6.75 goals per game average, the highest scoring offense in all divisions of NCAA Women's Ice Hockey.
Elmira held a sizeable advantage in shots this afternoon, outshooting the Red Dragons 53-to-24. Not only did Elmira put the pressure on with the volume of shots, they were also timely with their scoring as they took advantage with extra skaters as the Soaring Eagles went 3-for-5 on the power play while Cortland went 1-for-7.
Cassidy Delainey '15 opened the scoring today at the 5:10 mark of the first period as she netted a power play goal. Delainey's goal was setup by
Ashley Ryan '15 who passed the puck to
Ashton Hogan '15 at center ice. From there, Hogan would carry the puck into the attacking third where she would send a pass into the slot to Delainey, who one-timed the shot past the Cortland goalie for the score.
A little over two minutes later, the Red Dragons answered with a power play goal of their own as Katie Gili knocked in a shot off a rebound to knot the game at 1-1. The game remained tied for three and a half minutes until
Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 scored a power play goal to put the Soaring Eagles ahead, 2-1. Durnell's goal was setup by a
Phoebe Piku '16 shot that would be initially saved but Durnell found the loose puck and while falling to the ice, buried the shot for a goal. Rookie
Kyra McDonald '18 was also credited with an assist on the Durnell goal.
Elmira took a 3-1 lead with 2:10 left to play in the first period as
Erin Weston '15 made good on a two-on-one odd-man rush. After receiving a pass from Ryan, Weston carried the puck into the slot before dishing it to Hogan who immediately gave it back to Weston, allowing her to one-time the shot for the goal.
The Soaring Eagles took a 4-1 lead just 3:37 into the second period as
Jessica Prance '17 punched-in her first goal of the season.
Anna Tude '17 setup the goal as she started with the puck behind the net before wrapping around and dishing the puck to Prance in the slot, at which point, Prance took a one timer at point blank range for the score.
Brooke Wilgosh '15 would also be credited with an assist on the EC goal.
Nearly eight minutes would pass before the next Elmira goal but the wait was worth it as Tude scored her first goal of the season to give the Purple and Gold a 5-1 lead. On the power play, Tude rifled a shot from the blue line that would sneak its way past several defenders before beating a shielded Cortland goalie. Piku and Durnell picked up assists on the Tude goal, one that would hold up through the second period as the Soaring Eagles took a 5-1 edge into the final intermission.
Similar to yesterday's game, Elmira did not take it easy in the third period as the Purple and Gold scored an additional three goals. Hogan scored the first of EC's three goals at the 10:54 mark of the third period. Hogan's goal was the product of pure precision as she sniped a shot into the top right corner, beating the Cortland goalie glove side for the score. Delainey and
McKenna Farole '16 picked up assists on the Hogan goal.
Durnell would score Elmira's second goal of the period as she knocked-in a shot off a rebound, putting the Soaring Eagles ahead, 7-1. Ryan and Piku tallied assists on the goal. Then, with 2:24 to play in the game, Elmira's newest 100-point club member, Ryan, scored her first goal of the season to put EC up, 8-1. Ryan's goal was also the product of a heads up play, like Durnell, as she found the puck after Cortland's goalie made a save, and buried the shot for a goal with the backside of her stick. Durnell and Weston were credited with assists.
Elmira netminder,
Kelcey Crawford '18 got the start in net today. She would make 23 saves in 60 minutes of action as she picked up her second win of her rookie campaign.
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action next Saturday, November 22nd when Elmira hosts Utica College for an ECAC West battle at 3:00 p.m. Next Saturday's game will be a special one as the Elmira women welcome back to the Murray Athletic Center, former captain and AHCA All-American,
Tanis Lamoureux '14, who will be on the opposing bench as an assistant coach for the Utica College Pioneers.
