Women’s Ice Hockey Remains Unbeaten with 4-1 Win over Utica

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Pine Valley, NY --
The Elmira College women's ice hockey team used a 35-to-20 advantage in shots to claim a 4-1 ECAC West Conference win over visiting Utica College.  Elmira's Ashton Hogan '15 had a three-point performance as she netted a shorthanded goal, a power play goal, and assisted on another power play score.

The first period was filled with great back-and-forth action as the two teams combined for 23 shots, 13 for Elmira and 10 for Utica.  Elmira's advantage in shots would eventually turn into a 1-0 lead as Brooke Wilgosh '15 buried a slap shot from the blue line for a power play score at the 13:04 mark of the first period.  Wilgosh's goal was assisted by Ashley Ryan '15 and Ashton Hogan '15.

The Wilgosh goal would be the only score of the first period as the Soaring Eagles skated into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.  However, the score line would have been much different had a pair of shots by Wilgosh and Hogan not ricocheted off the pipe midway through the first period.

Utica began the second period with 5-on-3 man advantage as the Soaring Eagles closed out the first period with a pair of penalties.  The Elmira penalty kill unit proved to be up for the challenge as they killed off both power play chances.

The majority of period would be controlled by the Soaring Eagles as they Pioneers were held without a shot until Louise Steele-Norton made good on a two-on-one odd-man rush, beating EC goalie Kelcey Crawford '18 with a one-timer on Utica's first shot of the period at the 15:07 mark.

A little over two and a half minutes later, Elmira would reclaim the lead as EC newcomer Meghan Fonfara '18 scored the first goal of her collegiate career.  Fonfara's goal was a result of turnover at center-ice that allowed Johanna Eidensten '17 to dish the puck to Fonfara who backhanded the puck over the shoulder of the Utica goalie.

The Soaring Eagles increased their lead with just 1:03 to play in the second period as Hogan scored a shorthanded goal.  The goal was a result of pure effort as Hogan caused the turnover at Utica's blue line, before knocking-in her first shorthanded goal of the season.  Hogan's goal would hold up through the end of the period as the Purple and Gold took a 3-1 lead into the final intermission.

In the third period, the physicality really picked up as both teams were called for three penalties apiece for four power play chances, two for Utica and two for Elmira.  However, the Soaring Eagles were the only one to take advantage of the extra skater as Hogan scored her NCAA Division III-leading eighth goal of the season, giving her both a shorthanded and a power play goal. Ryan and Cassidy Delainey '15 were credited with assists on the Hogan goal at the 14:34 mark of the period.

Hogan's goal held up through the end of the period as the Soaring Eagles skated away with a 4-1 victory.  Crawford, Elmira's starting netminder, made 19 saves as she improved to 3-0-0 on the season.

The Soaring Eagles will look to pick up another win against the Pioneers tomorrow as the Elmira women travel to Utica, NY for a 3:00 p.m. game.
