Hogan’s Second Hat-Trick Of The Season Lifts Women’s Hockey Over Utica

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Utica, NY -- With just 2:19 left in regulation time, Olivia Nystrom '16 poked the puck away from the defender on the goal line and passed it to Ashton Hogan '15, who would score the eventual game-winning goal to give the Elmira College women's ice hockey team (6-0-0, 4-0 ECAC West) a 7-5 win over the Pioneers of Utica College (2-2, 2-2 ECAC West). Hogan finished the game with three goals and an assist, her second hat-trick of the season. Elmira's 6-0-0 start is the best start since the 2002-03 season when the Purple and Gold opened the year on a seven game winning streak.

Phoebe Piku '16 netted the game's first goal, just 4:27 into the game after collecting a rebound from an Ashley Ryan '15 shot in front of the net to give the Soaring Eagles a quick 1-0 lead over the Pioneers. Utica answered back to tie the game just over a minute later and would put EC in an unfamiliar situation as the Pioneers took a 2-1 lead with 8:22 left in the first period. This is the first time that the Soaring Eagles have trailed all season, a stretch that spanned over 311 minutes of game-time. Utica did not stop there as they stretched their lead to 3-1 with another score with 4:05 remaining in the opening period. EC went into the first intermission trailing 3-1 on the scoreboard and were outshot, 12-11.

Elmira started the second period on a power play thanks to a Utica penalty that occurred with 18 seconds left in the first period. It did not take long for the Soaring Eagles to capitalize on that man-up opportunity as Ashton Hogan '15 finished up a rebound from Erin Weston '15 in front of the net just 27 seconds into the second period to make it a 3-2 game. Rachel Grampp '18 then evened up the score minutes later as she blasted a shot past the Pioneer netminder, Keira Goin. Hogan almost gave Elmira the lead a couple minutes later on another man-up advantage with a one-timer in front of the net but Goin made the save to protect the 3-3 tie. EC had another golden opportunity turned away by Goin after Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 spilt the defenders to create a one-on-one chance. Utica took a 4-3 lead with 6:37 left in the second period but EC answered back with 4:50 seconds left in the period after Ashley Ryan '15 received a drop pass from Weston and blasted the puck past the Utica goaltender from in front of the goal. Elmira outshot Utica 15-11 in the second period.

Elmira took a 5-4 lead 1:34 into the third period after Hogan grabbed a loose puck at mid-ice and took it down the right hand side down to the goal line, sped around the Utica defender, and stuffed it through the five-hole of the Pioneer's goalie in front of the net. Utica tied the game up at 5-5 with 8:37 left in the third period. But, with just 2:19 seconds left in regulation time, Nystrom would get the puck off a poke check and pass it to Hogan who would put it past the Pioneers' netminder to complete her third career hat-trick and net what would be the game-winning goal for the Purple and Gold. Nystrom would seal the Elmira win after picking the puck up and shaking two defenders to go on a breakaway and easily tap the puck into the empty net with two seconds left in regulation to give the Soaring Eagles the 7-5 win.

Kelcey Crawford '18 started in net for the EC women and recorded six saves until Kyle Nelson '17 entered the game with 4:05 left in the first period to register her first minutes of the season and produced 21 saves in the Elmira victory today.

Elmira will compete next at the Cardinal-Panther Classic on Saturday, November 29th and Sunday November 30th. EC will kick-off the tournament against Middlebury College next Saturday, November 29th at 3:00 p.m.
