College Hockey Stats Box Score
Plattsburgh, NY -- In a rematch of the 2012-13 NCAA Women's Ice Hockey National Championship game, the Elmira College women's ice hockey team once again skated away with a win as they downed No. 4/5 Middlebury College, 4-1 at the Cardinal-Panther Classic. With today's win, the Soaring Eagles improve to 7-0-0, tying the 2002-03 version of the Purple and Gold for the best start in program history.
Both teams had plenty of chances to score today as Elmira and Middlebury took 28 shots apiece, but it would be the Soaring Eagles who would make the most of their chances as they scored four times, going 1-of-4 on power play opportunities while the Panthers went 1-for-6.
Elmira's high-powered offense wasted little time today as
Arianna Smith '18 scored just 3:54 into the first period to put the Soaring Eagles ahead 1-0. Classmate
Erin Kishoni '18 was credited with an assist on Smith's goal.
A little over 10 minutes later in the period, Elmira took a 2-0 lead behind a power play goal by
Sydney Fischer '17, her first goal of the season. Picking up assists on the eventual game-winner was
Johanna Eidensten '17 and
Cassidy Delainey '15. Fischer's goal would hold up through the first period as Elmira took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Soaring Eagles went up 3-0 early in the second period thanks to an
Olivia Nystrom '16 goal 2:29 into the period.
Sarah Hughson '18 picked up an assist on the goal, the first of her collegiate career. Middlebury cut the lead to two at the 13:45 mark on an Emily Fluke power play goal. Fluke's goal would be the final score of the period as Elmira carried a 3-1 lead into the final intermission.
In the third period, both Elmira and Middlebury penalty kill units were put the test as each team was called for a pair of penalties. However, it would be the Soaring Eagles who would take advantage of the extra skater as
Phoebe Piku '16 scored a power play goal with 2:29 left in regulation. Eidensten was credited with an assist on the power play score, her second assist of the afternoon.
Piku's score would be the final goal of the afternoon as Elmira skated away with a 4-1 win. In goal,
Kyle Nelson '17 got her first start of the season and would make the most of it as she stopped 27 shots to earn her second win of the year.
Elmira will conclude play at the Cardinal-Panther Classic tomorrow when the Soaring Eagles face the winner between No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State and No. 4/5 Gustavus Adolphus College.
