Women's Ice Hockey Falls to No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State in Cardinal-Panther Classic Final

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Plattsburgh, NY --
The Elmira College women's ice hockey team suffered their first defeat of the 2014-15 season, falling to No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State, 4-2 in the Cardinal-Panther Classic Championship game. Kyle Nelson'17 made 24 saves in the first of three regular season meetings at Plattsburgh.

EC had several opportunities throughout the first period to strike first, but it would be the Cardinals who would score the game's opening goal with 4:12 left in the first period. Elmira never wavered from their aggressive offensive attack, outshooting Plattsburgh, 10-6, but the Soaring Eagles trailed 1-0 after one period of play.

The second period again would only see one goal scored, but this time it would come from an Elmira skater. Johanna Eidensten '17 found the back of the net for the first time this season and evened the score at one apiece. Sarah Hughson '18 picked up an assist on the goal. EC again outshot the Cardinals in the period, 14-10, as the teams headed to the third period tied at one.

Elmira's penalty kill unit had erased 1:24 of the two minute interference penalty assessed to Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 at the end of the second period, but Plattsburgh scored the first of two power play goals just 12 seconds into the third period. The Cardinals made it a 3-1 game three minutes later and then a second power play goal with 13:52 left in regulation gave Plattsburgh a 4-1 advantage. Eidensten scored her second goal of the afternoon to cut EC's deficit to two with 12:26 to play, but the Purple and Gold would not get any closer as they would fall 4-2.

Eidensten was named to the Cardinal-Panther Classic All-Tournament Team after recording two goals and two assists over the weekend. Phoebe Piku '16, who scored one of Elmira's four goals against Middlebury College on Saturday, joined Eidensten on the All-Tournament Team as one of the two defensemen.

EC returns home for a pair of ECAC West Conference games next weekend when they host SUNY Potsdam. The Soaring Eagles will take on the Bears at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, December 6th at 3:00 p.m., then at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7th at Elmira's First Arena.
