Women's Ice Hockey Rolls Past SUNY Potsdam, 7-1

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Pine Valley, NY --
The Elmira College women's ice hockey team rebounded nicely from their first loss of the 2014-15 season as they dominated the visiting Bears of SUNY Potsdam, 7-1, to remain perfect in ECAC West Conference play. Ashley Ryan'15, after not recording a point in either of Elmira's games at the Cardinal-Panther Classic last weekend, had four points on two goals and two assists in the victory.

Elmira's special teams did most of the damage in today's contest as EC scored three power-play goals and one shorthanded goal. Ashton Hogan '15 scored on both the power play and the penalty kill, upping her NCAA Division III-leading goal total to 13. Also finding the back of the net on the afternoon were Sarah Hughson '18, Johanna Eidensten '17, and Meghan Fonfara '18.

It did not take long for the Soaring Eagles to strike, as Hughson put home a rebound from a Ryan shot to notch the game's first goal just 59 seconds in. Also recording an assist on the goal was Eidensten. EC continued to pepper the net with shots, but Potsdam's goaltender, Alexane Rodrigue, kept it just a one-goal game by repeatedly turning Elmira's shots away.

The Soaring Eagles went on the power play for the first time with 10:31 to play in the first period and it took Hogan just 28 seconds to double-up EC's advantage. Hogan was the recipient of a cross-ice pass from Ryan in front of the net and the senior forward finished with a wrist shot past Rodrigue for her 12th goal of the season. Also tallying an assist was Brooke Wilgosh '15. EC would outshoot the Bears 21-3 in the period and led 2-0 at the first intermission.

The Purple and Gold erupted for four goals in the second period, each of the four coming from a different skater. First, Eidensten continued her strong play of late and found the back of the net for another Elmira power-play goal, with assists being credited to Jessica Prance '17 and Phoebe Piku '16. Then, freshman talent Meghan Fonfara'18 finished off a breakaway with her second career goal, making it 4-0 with 12:47 remaining in the period. Fonfara's scoring opportunity was set up by a perfect lead pass from Louisa Lippiatt Durnell'18 that put Fonfara past the last Potsdam defender.

The scoring did not stop there as Ryan netted her third goal of the season, which came off a Hughson cross, as she was falling to the ice. A series of penalties created a 4-on-3 advantage for the Bears, but that did not stop Hogan from scoring her second shorthanded goal of the season to give the Purple and Gold a 6-0 lead. Hogan also got in behind the defense with a pass from Piku and made a nice move in front of Rodrigue to score the goal. That would be EC's final goal of the period as they led 6-0 after two.

The Bears replaced Rodrigue with Brianna Fiddler to start the third period, and the new goaltender seemed to give Potsdam an extra boost as they started challenging EC goaltender Kyle Nelson '17 with several shots early on in the period. Nearly seven minutes into the third period, Potsdam's leading scorer, Jordan Ott, had a one-on-one with Nelson and just snuck the puck by her to get the Bears on the board and break-up the shutout. Elmira maintained their 6-1 advantage for much of the third period, but Ryan changed that with 6:16 left in the game as she scored her second goal of the afternoon. Ryan, with EC on the power play, went coast-to-coast, weaving in-between several Potsdam defenders, and beat Fiddler for the man-up score. The Purple and Gold would cruise the rest of the way for the 7-1 victory.

The Soaring Eagles return to the ice tomorrow to complete the season series with SUNY Potsdam. Tomorrow's contest will take place at 1:00 p.m. in Downtown Elmira's First Arena as part of the Home for the Holidays event.
