Men’s Ice Hockey Falls On The Road To Amherst

Amherst, MA -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (2-3-1, 2-2-1 ECAC West) fell 5-4 to Amherst College (4-1-0, 2-1-0 NESCAC) today. Carter Shinkaruk '16 led the Soaring Eagles with two goals while Sal Magliocco '17 made 29 saves in today's action.

The Jeffs capitalized on a power-play opportunity just 1:32 into the first period to take the early 1-0 lead. The Purple and Gold answered back 6:32 into the period when Andrew Ciampichini '15 passed the puck to Shinkaruk who got past the Amherst defenders and put a shot on the Jeffs netminder. Shinkaruk then picked up his own rebound and lifted the puck over the goalie to score the shorthanded goal. Amherst took a 2-1 lead with 51 seconds left in the first period on another power-play chance. Magliocco made 14 saves in the period.
 
Brian Depp '16 evened things up 10:21 into the second period when he skated down the right side of the rink and put the puck past the Amherst goalie. The Jeffs took back the lead 2:51 later while Alexander Taulien '17 tied the score back up at 3-3 with 2:46 seconds left in the second period with Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 and Rob Simpson '16 being credited with the assists on the play. Magliocco stopped seven shots in the second period.
 
Amherst scored two goals in the first 8:46 into the third period to take a 5-3 lead. With 1:12 left in the third period Eric David '15 dumped a puck down into the corner where ten Vaanholt was waiting and passed the puck over to Shinkaruk who was in front of the net and hit the top right corner of the net to trail the Jeffs, 5-4. Elmira ran out of time before finding the equalizer as the Purple and Gold fell, 5-4.

The Soaring Eagles will compete next tomorrow, November 30th when the EC men take on No. 6 Babson College. The puck is set to drop at 3:00 p.m.
