College Hockey Stats Box ScoreAston, PA -- After trailing for the majority of the game, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC West) used a two-goal third period to force overtime. Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, an untimely penalty in overtime turned in a Neumann University (1-0-1, 1-0-1 ECAC West) power play goal, handing Elmira a 3-2 loss in EC's season opener.
The Soaring Eagles were held scoreless through the first two periods of play, primarily because of the offensive pressure from the Knights as Neumann held a 34-to-12 advantage through the first two periods, resulting in a 2-0 lead for the Knights. However, the Soaring Eagles stole the momentum in the third period, thanks to a power play goal by
Alexander Taulien '17 at the 7:19 mark.
Tommy Sumi '16 and
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 picked up assists on Elmira's first goal of the season.
36 seconds later
Eric David '15 evened the game at 2-2 with his first goal of the season.
Jeremy Marginsky '18 assisted on the game-tying goal, the first assist of his collegiate career.
At the 12:10 mark of the period, Neumann's Brandon Gagne was called for a tripping penalty and then 1:31 later, teammate Steve Low was called for interference, giving Elmira a 5-on-3 opportunity. Elmira kept the pressure on but was unable to punch home a man-up goal as the Knights successfully killed off the two penalties. Neumann's penalty kill efforts would eventually force overtime.
Penalties would come into play in the overtime period as Taulien was called for a tripping penalty just 18 seconds into overtime. Elmira's penalty killers nearly escaped without conceding a goal but with four seconds left on the power play, Nuemann would take advantage of a 3-2 odd-man rush as Chris Bournazos finished a one-timer for the game-winner.
Ryan deMelo '15 got the start in net tonight for the Soaring Eagles and would make 37 saves in his season debut.
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action tomorrow night when Elmira travels to Rye, NY to take on another ECAC West opponent in Manhattanville College. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
