Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Whittle's Third Period Goal Leads to 1-1 Overtime Tie against Manhattanville

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Rye, NY --
For the second straight night, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (0-1-1, 0-1-1 ECAC West) used a late surge against Manhattanville College (1-0-1, 1-0-1 ECAC West) to force overtime.  Neither team was able to break the tie in the five minute overtime period, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

Similar to Elmira's previous game against Neumann University, the Soaring Eagles were held scoreless through the first two periods, despite holding a 23-to-20 advantage in shots which turned into a 42-to-32 advantage for the game.  However, it would be the power play chances that would play the largest role in tonight's game as Elmira went 1-for-5 while the Valiants made good on one of their three man-up chances.

Manhattanville's lone goal of the night came at the 8:32 mark of the period on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity.  The Manahattanville goal looked like it would be the difference in tonight's game as the next 27 minutes were relatively uneventful.

After being called for a cross-checking penalty at the 13:46 mark of the third period, an opportunity presented itself for Elmira when the Valiants bailed the Soaring Eagles out by taking a penalty of their own 1:16 later.  Once the EC penalty was over, the Purple and Gold power play made quick work on their fifth power play chance as Greg Whittle '16 netted his first goal of the year with 3:37 to play in regulation.  Assisting on Whittle's goal was Tommy Sumi '16, his second assist of the year, and Nick Owen '17 who recorded his first assist of the season.

Whittle's late goal would eventually force overtime but neither team would be able to break the tie as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.  Elmira's Sal Magliocco '17 got the start in net tonight and made 31 saves.

The Elmira men will look to break into the win column this Friday, November 14th when the Soaring Eagles host Utica College in a rematch of last year's ECAC West Conference Tournament title game.  Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Elmira College's Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
