Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Special Teams Lead Elmira to 7-2 Rout of Fredonia State

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Fredonia, NY --
The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (3-4-1) snapped a three-game skid tonight as the Soaring Eagles thumped Fredonia State (1-3-3), 7-2.  Despite being outshot 45-to-38, the Soaring Eagles managed to win tonight's game with ease as their five-goal victory is their largest win since last year's November matchup with Fredonia, a game EC won 5-0.

Credit much of Elmira's success tonight to their play on special teams.  EC's power play unit went 2-for-5 and the Elmira penalty kill unit also produced a pair of shorthanded goals, both coming on the same Fredonia power play.

A flurry of goals were scored by both teams in the final 5:22 of the first period, beginning with Andrew Ciampichini '15, who put Elmira on the scoreboard first at the 14:38 mark.  Ciampichini's goal was his first of the season and was assisted by defenseman Eddie Nolan '17, his first assist of the year.

Elmira's lead was short-lived as the Blue Devils answered 20 seconds later on a Marcus Ortiz goal that knotted things at 1-1.  However, the Soaring Eagles had a response of their own as Greg Whittle '16 scored his third goal of the year just 1:08 after the Ortiz score. Whittle's go-ahead goal was assisted by Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 and Carter Shinkaruk '16.

The Soaring Eagles carried their 2-1 lead into the first intermission but EC's efforts on the attack would be a sign of things to come as the Purple and Gold would go on to score three unanswered goals in the second period to take a comfortable 5-1 lead.

Eric David '15 got things started in the second period as his goal at the 7:02 mark put Elmira ahead 3-1.  David's eventual game-winning goal came on assists from Travis Meyer '17 and Ciampichini.  Meyer's assist was the first of his Elmira College career.

At the 11:36 mark of the second period, David would be called for a two-minute minor for tripping, giving the Blue Devils a power play opportunity at a critical moment of the game.  However, Elmira's penalty kill unit proved to be up for the challenge, and then some, as the Purple and Gold scored a pair of shorthanded goals on Fredonia's power play.

Ciampichini scored the first of Elmira's two shorthanded goals just 14 seconds into the Fredonia power play.  Shinkaruk would be credited with an assist on the goal.  Then, with 25 seconds remaining on the penalty kill, Tommy Sumi '16 would score shorthanded to give Elmira a 5-1 lead.  Sumi's goal was assisted by Alexander Taulien '17 and would be the last score of the second period as Elmira took their 5-1 lead into the third and final period.

Following his assist on Sumi's shorthanded goal, Taulien would score a special teams goal of his own in the third period.  Unlike Sumi's goal, Taulien's would be scored on Elmira's power play as he knocked-in his team-leading third power play score of the season at the 7:08 mark.  David and Sumi picked up assists on the power play score.

Fredonia responded with a power play score a little over five minutes later, cutting Elmira's lead to 6-2 with 7:29 to play in regulation.

Following the Fredonia score, the Soaring Eagles looked to be on their way to a four-goal win but a late penalty committed by the Blue Devils gave Elmira a power play chance that they would make good on with 25 seconds left in the game.  Scoring the EC power play goal was first-year talent Tyler Theodoulou '18, whose late score was the first of his collegiate career. Picking up assists on Theodoulou's career-first was Brett Mackell '18 and Nick Owen '17.  Mackell's assist was also a career-first.

Second-year goalie Sal Magliocco '17 got the start between the pipes tonight for the Soaring Eagles.  Magliocco was tested tonight as the Roslyn, NY native was forced to come up with 43 saves, tying his career-high as he picked up his second win of the year.

Elmira will play in their fourth game in seven days this Friday, December 5th when the Soaring Eagles host Nazareth College for an ECAC West Conference showdown.  The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
