Late Shooting Woes Leads to 74-68 Loss in Men’s Basketball

Box Score

Hoboken, NJ -- The Elmira College men's basketball team (10-14, 5-8 Empire 8) led Stevens Tech (17-8, 10-4 Empire 8) for almost the entirety of tonight's game but an 0-for-2 shooting performance from the field coupled with a1-for-5 showing from the charity stripe in the final 2:30 led to a 74-68 loss for the Soaring Eagles.

Three Elmira players finished with double-digits as Neil Randolph '15 led all scorers today with 22 points, his 13th 20-plus point performance of the season.  Randolph also finished with six assists, a career high for the Ireland native.  Josh Keys '14 came out of his shooting slump tonight as he knocked down five three pointers en route to his game's 17 points.  Elmira big-man Chris Cassidy '14 was the Soaring Eagles' other double-digit scorer as he poured in 15 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.

Stevens Tech knew it was going to be a tough one tonight, especially since EC sharpshooter Josh Keys '14 opened today's game with three point bucket.  From there, the Ducks would go on to take a three point lead at the 17:10 mark, but Keys again came through with a momentum changing basket from downtown to tie things up in the early-going of today's game.

Keys' three-pointer would spark a 10-0 run by the Soaring Eagles as they took a 15-8 lead with 13:42 to play in the first half. During EC's 10-0 run, Keys scored six points on two-made three pointers while Randolph scored the other four.

Elmira would eventually take the largest lead of the game at the 9:17 mark of the first half, 24-15.  The Soaring Eagles would go on to take a 35-31 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Elmira maintained their lead for the majority of the final 20 minutes, taking their largest lead with 2:58 to play, 67-60.  Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, they would be outscored 14-1 in the final 2:58, leading to a 74-68 loss.

The Elmira men will play their final contest of the 2013-14 season tomorrow as they travel to take on Hartwick College.  Tomorrow's game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Oneonta, NY.
