Elmira, NY -- For the second consecutive season the Elmira College women's soccer team and the Hartwick College Hawks could not determine a winner despite 110 minutes of play. Unlike 2013, which saw the teams play to a 3-3 overtime tie, neither team could find the back of the net as the game ended 0-0.
The empty scoreboard was not due to a lack of chances as EC and Hartwick combined for 34 shots, with 14 of those on target. The goalkeepers, Elmira's
Amanda Banner '17 and Hartwick's Annie Millar, were up to the task making eight and six saves respectively.
EC opened up the game firing on all cylinders as they marched down the field and applied plenty of offensive pressure on the Hawks in the first five minutes. It nearly paid off for the Soaring Eagles as
Mackenzie Donohue '15 fired a bending shot from just inside the 18-yard box that just missed high over the crossbar.
Hartwick would settle in following Donohue's near-goal as the pace of the game picked up on both ends of the field. The Hawks had two good looks in the first half, but Banner stood tall to make the saves and keep the score even. Hartwick outshot EC 9-5 in the first half, but it was 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
Elmira was a bit more aggressive on the offensive end in the second half as the women looked for that go-ahead score, but none of their seven shots found the back of the net. EC's defense also played strong in the second half, limiting Hartwick to just five shots, two of which were on goal. The Purple and Gold put together a late rush as the clock ticked down to zero, but the attempt by
Kate DeLellis '18 missed wide left, forcing EC's second overtime game of the season
Just over 4 minutes into the first overtime period, Hartwick was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out. Hartwick's Kylie Thayer sent a rocket of a shot towards the upper part of the net, but Banner made a leaping save to deflect the ball off the crossbar and out of danger. Only a few minutes later, it was the Soaring Eagles who nearly won the game as Donohue and
Mollie Hamilton '15 linked up at the top of the 18-yard box.
Hamilton received the pass from Donohue, took one touch inside the box and fired a high, bending shot at the net. Her shot cleared the outstretched arms of Millar, but the crossbar was not kind to EC as the shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and deflected away from the goal line. Donohue ran into the box in an attempt to capitalize on the rebound, but she was knocked to the ground by a sliding Millar bringing Elmira's scoring opportunity to a close.
Chances came at a premium for the remainder of the first overtime period and also in the second overtime period, leading to the 0-0 tie.
EC heads out on the road for their next contest, traveling to nearby Ithaca, NY to take on the Bombers of Ithaca College on Wednesday, September 24
th. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
