Women's Soccer Upended by No. 19 Ithaca

 | HTML Box Score

Ithaca, NY --
The Elmira College women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort against the No. 19 Bombers of Ithaca College, but it was not enough as EC fell 1-0. The Soaring Eagles defense along with goaltender Gabe Carmona '18 excelled today, limiting an Ithaca offense that scored six goals in their previous game against Alfred University.

EC was forced to play defense early on in the first half as Ithaca attempted a handful of shots through the first 15 minutes of play. The Bombers nearly put the first goal on the board in the 17th minutes, but the Soaring Eagles were saved by the post as the ball ricocheted out of danger. Elmira, after avoiding a 1-0 hole, turned up the offensive pressure and took advantage of the momentum shift. EC was awarded two corner kicks and got two shots off as well, but they were unable to score keeping it 0-0 as the game rolled into the 30th minute.

It would not be a 0-0 game for much longer, unfortunately, as the Bombers would score the eventual game-winning goal 40 minutes into the contest. Ithaca's Kelly Pantason rifled a shot from 30 yards out that soared out of the reach of Carmona and into the upper part of the net. That score gave Ithaca the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Elmira would not go away quietly in the second half, nearly knotting things up at one just 41 seconds out of halftime, but Ithaca's defense and goalkeeper, Beth Coppolecchia, was able to keep the Purple and Gold off the scoreboard to secure the 1-0 win.

The Soaring Eagles return to action on Saturday, September 27th when they host Stevens Tech. in an Empire 8 contest. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
