Men's Ice Hockey Game Notes - Jan. 16 - 17

Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team will look to continue their strong play in 2015 as the Soaring Eagles host No. 5 Oswego State and Salve Regina for a pair of non-conference games this weekend.  The first of two games is scheduled for tomorrow, January 16th against Oswego at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.  

Last Time Out
Elmira is coming off a 5-2 road win against the Bears of SUNY Potsdam. In the win, the Soaring Eagles used three third period goals to clinch their seventh win of the season and their fourth victory in their last five games.

Shorthanded Effort
In Elmira's win over Potsdam, Michael Collins '16 scored a shorthanded empty net goal.  Collins' shorthanded goal marks the third consecutive game Elmira has scored on an opposing team's power-play opportunity.  The last time EC scored a shorthanded goal in three straight games dates back to the 2003-04 season.

Strong Power-Play Unit
Elmira's power-play unit continues to put goals on the scoreboard as the Purple and Gold went 1-for-4 in power-play chances against SUNY Potsdam.  The Soaring Eagles are scoring on 29.5 percent of their power-play opportunities, the eighth-best average in NCAA Division III men's ice hockey.  

Scouting Oswego
Alex Botten '17 took the team lead in scoring against Southern New Hampshire, scoring two goals and assisting on a third to increase his season totals to six goals, 16 assists, and 22 points. Botten increased his points per game average to 1.69 and moved into fourth place in the country in scoring average. Oswego State has had no issues scoring the puck this season, averaging 4.9 goals per game, and that is reflected in the Lakers' individual scoring totals. Behind Botten is fellow 20-point scorer Shawn Hulshof '17 who leads Oswego with 10 goals scored and ranks 12th in the nation in points per game at 1.43. Also, both Matt Galati '17 and Kenny Neil '17 are nearing 20 points on the season, coming into tonight with 19 and 18, respectively.

Scouting Salve
The Seahawks enter the weekend with a 6-5-2 overall record and are winners of three of their last four games.  Salve Regina is led by sophomore Evan Schultz '17 and his team-leading 19 points from five goals and 14 assists. Schultz has been Salve's biggest contributor in 2014-15.  His 1.58 points per game are the sixth-most in the country while his 1.17 assists per contest are tied for second-best.
