Aston, PA -- Ashley Ryan '15 of the Elmira College women's ice hockey team (11-1-1, 7-0-0 ECACW) scored three goals to lead the No. 2 nationally ranked Soaring Eagles past Neumann University (3-11-1, 1-8-0 ECACW), 8-2. Tonight's game marks the first ECAC West win for the Soaring Eagles since taking a break from conference play back in December.
Elmira controlled tonight's game from start to finish, keeping the pressure on Neumann's defense by outshooting the Knights, 50-to-13. The advantage in shots paid off as Elmira scored eight goals, marking the fourth time this season the Soaring Eagles have score eight or more in a single game.
Ryan put the Soaring Eagles in front 1-0 as she scored her first of three goals tonight at the 7:41 mark of the first period.
Erin Weston '15 and
Rachel Grampp '18 were credited with assists on the game-opening goal.
Neumann evened things at 1-1 less than a minute later as Shanelle Doucette scored an unassisted goal. However, Ryan would score one more time before the period ended to give the Purple and Gold a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.
Brooke Wilgosh '15 and Weston picked up assists on Ryan's goal.
In the second period, Neumann once again tied things up on yet another unassisted effort thanks to a goal by Casey Kilduff.
With the game tied at two apiece, Elmira looked to respond and did so in a big way as the Purple and Gold scored four unanswered goals to end the period, taking a 6-2 lead into the final intermission. Making Elmira's four straight goals even more impressive is the fact that the final three goals were scored in the final 2:47 of the second period. Scoring goals in the third period were
Jessica Prance '17, whose goal would go down as the game-winner, Grampp,
Ashton Hogan '15, and Ryan.
Leading by four goals, Elmira tacked on an additional two goals in the third period to skate away with a convincing 8-2 victory. Scoring EC's goals in the third were
Meghan Fonfara '18 and
Phoebe Piku '16.
Kelcey Crawford '18 got her first start in net today since December 7th and did not disappoint as the rookie netminder made 11 saves en route to her fifth win of the 2014-15 season.
Elmira will look to repeat today's performance as the Soaring Eagles take on Neumann again tomorrow, January 17th at 4:00 p.m. in Aston, PA.
