Aston, PA -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team held steady in their pursuit for perfection within ECAC West play, completing the weekend sweep of Neumann University with a 5-2 win Saturday afternoon.
Ashton Hogan '15 netted two goals for the Soaring Eagles, leaving her just one point shy of reaching the 100-point plateau for her career.
It looked as though EC was going to enjoy another high-goal output as
Lindsay Burrows'15 gave the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead just 3:59 into the game, but Burrows' goal would be the only score of the first period despite the Purple and Gold putting 14 shots on net. Elmira did have to defend two Neumann power-play opportunities at the 9:53 and 3:55 marks of the first period, but even with playing a man-down twice in the frame, EC held the Knights to just four shots.
The Purple and Gold did not enjoy their 1-0 lead for long into the second period as Neumann evened the score at 1-1 after just 1:35 of play into the second frame. Shortly after the goal, the Knights went on the power play for the third time in the game, only to see a penalty of their own eliminate their man-up advantage 17 seconds later.
EC again had to send out their penalty kill unit after an interference penalty was called against them less than two minutes later, but this time a goal would be scored and by the best goal scorer in the country,
Ashton Hogan '15. Hogan's shorthanded goal was her third of the season, moving her into the national lead for shorthanded goals scored.
Five minutes after Hogan's goal, Elmira added to their lead as
Olivia Nystrom '16 linked up with
Johanna Eidensten '16 and Sydney Fisher '17 to score her fifth goal of the season. The Knights made it a 3-2 game just over two minutes after Nystrom's score, but EC was able to regain their two-goal advantage with just 2:14 remaining in the second period. Providing the Soaring Eagles with some extra cushion was senior defensemen
Marissa Mongillo '15, whose goal was the first of her career.
The Purple and Gold fended off another three Neumann power plays throughout the third period, maintaining their two-goal lead in the process. Then, 28 seconds after the Knights pulled their goalie, Hogan sealed the Elmira victory with her second, and EC's fifth, goal of the afternoon.
Kyle Nelson '17 picked up her fifth victory of the season, stopping 23 shots in the win.
The Soaring Eagles will play a rare Tuesday night game this week as they travel to Williamstown, Massachusetts to take on the Ephs of Williams College. That game, which is Elmira's final non-conference game of the regular season, is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m.
