Williamstown, MA -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team withstood a tough road test at Williams College, scoring two third-period goals to pull out the 4-2 non-conference victory.
Anna Tude '17 broke a 2-2 tie on EC's second power-play goal of the night with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.
Although it was Tude's heroics that lifted the Soaring Eagles to their sixth win in their last seven games, tonight's game will be remembered for the milestone that senior forward
Ashton Hogan '15 reached at the 14:13 mark of the second period. Hogan needed just one point to join the exclusive 100-point club and did so in the second period with her 20th goal of the season. Hogan's goal was one of two on the night as her empty net goal with 31 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Purple and Gold.
Elmira had their chances in the first period of play, outshooting Williams, 12-3, but it would be the Ephs who would hold the 1-0 advantage after the first 20 minutes of the game. This marked just the third time all season that the Purple and Gold trailed after the first period of play.
EC's deficit did not last long as they took advantage of the remaining 1:13 of a power play carried over from the first period to net the equalizer. Doing the damage, as she has all season, was
Cassidy Delainey '15 who netted her NCAA Division III-leading eighth power-play goal of the year. Picking up assists on the Delainey goal were
Ashley Ryan '15 and
Brooke Wilgosh '15.
It took nearly 14 minutes for the next goal of the game to be scored, but it was worth the wait as Hogan's 20th goal of the season would not only be her 100th career point, but also give EC a 2-1 lead.
Meghan Fonfara '18 would be credited with an assist on the score. It looked as though Elmira would go into the second intermission with a one-goal advantage, but Williams would even the score with their second power-play goal of the game with just 18 seconds remaining in the period.
Williams, hoping to upset the number two team in the nation, put a handful of shots on net to open the third period of play, but Elmira goaltender
Kyle Nelson '17 and her defense stood up to the task, keeping the score tied 2-2. Minutes later, a Wilgosh hooking penalty gave the Ephs another two minutes with a man-up advantage, but EC's penalty kill unit took care of business and thwarted the opportunity.
A little over a minute after killing off the Wilgosh penalty, EC was able to draw a tripping penalty that put the second ranked power-play unit on the ice for two minutes. With just 20 seconds left in the power play, Tude circled around into the slot and fired a slap shot on net. The puck breezed past a semi-shielded Christina Cleroux and into the back of the net, putting the Soaring Eagles on top, 3-2, with 7:03 to play. Recording assists on the eventual game-winning goal were
Olivia Nystrom '16 and
Phoebe Piku '16.
Elmira was able to negate any scoring opportunity for Williams for the remainder of the game, including for the 1:21 stretch that the Ephs played with an extra attacker on the ice. Williams held possession in their offensive end for much of the final two minutes of play, but Hogan was able to break ahead of the pack after receiving a pass from Ryan to notch an empty net goal and put the Ephs away for good.
Nelson made 17 saves en route to her sixth win of the season.
EC returns home to prepare for a two-game set against ECAC West opponent Chatham University this weekend. Game one of the weekend series is scheduled for Saturday, January 24th at 3:00 p.m. in the Murray Athletic Center.
