Ithaca, NY -- Entering the day on a three-game winning streak on the strength of a red-hot offense, the Elmira College field hockey team had upset on its mind when it made the short trip to take on perennial power Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers grounded the high-flying Soaring Eagles offense, as Elmira was shutout for the first time in eight contests by a final score of 4-0.
One of the hallmarks of Elmira's recent string of success was getting off to fast starts. The home side took a page out of the Purple and Gold's playbook, jumping out to a commanding halftime lead on the strength of three first half goals.
Bombers leading scorer Colleen Keegan-Twombly got Ithaca on the board in the 15
th minute of play, settling a ball in the arc, before turning and firing it past Elmira keeper
Mikayla Rebusmen '17 for her conference leading ninth goal of the season. Viktoria Schultz would double the lead with a deflection goal in the 25
th minute, while Michaela Donohue would add a third just 2:36 before the halftime horn.
Ithaca would stymie Elmira's hopes of a comeback bid, limiting the visitors to only two shot attempts in the second half. Cassie Schuttrumpf would cap the scoring for the Bombers with her fifth goal of the season on a nice combination passing play in the 53
rd minute.
Turning PointAfter Ithaca snatched the early lead, Elmira began to generate a little offensive momentum midway through the opening half.
Alli Gilbert '16 and
Kristy Haskell '19 both got solid looks at the Ithaca cage, but could not score an equalizer. The Bombers would regain possession and hit Elmira on a quick counter, eventually doubling the lead on Schultz's deflection goal.
