Pine Valley, NY -- One day after being shut down by Ithaca College, the offensive dry spell continued for the Elmira College field hockey team, as it fell to Washington & Jefferson College by an identical 4-0 final score. It is the first time this season Elmira has been shut out in back-to-back games this season.
The visitors jumped out to an early lead in the fourth minute when the Presidents capitalized on their first penalty corner. Allison Morrissey inserted the ball to Laura O'Malley at the left side of the arc. She set up the ball before firing a howitzer of a slap shot inside the far right corner of the cage.
Morrissey would set another in the 22
nd minute of play. She slipped a perfect stretch pass deep into the Elmira zone to Amanda Steffey, who slipped a sneaky shot inside the left post to double the Washington & Jefferson lead. It would remain 2-0 at halftime, as
Mikayla Rebusmen '17 did well to keep the Soaring Eagles within striking distance. She made six saves before being relieved at the half.
The Soaring Eagles did well to limit the Presidents chances in the second half, holding the visitors to just five shots. Unfortunately, the Purple and Gold could not generate any offense of their own, getting just two shot attempts in the second half and three overall for the game.
Washington & Jefferson would add two late goals to cap the final score line. Morrissey would continue her big game adding the third goal on a nifty deflection, before collecting her third assist of the game on O'Malley's second goal of the game.
Turning PointAfter struggling to generate much possession early, the Soaring Eagles began to grow into the game midway through the first half. However, in the 22
nd minute Washington & Jefferson would steal possession in the midfield and launch a quick counter attack, which would directly lead to the Presidents second goal.
