Cortland, NY -- Coming off of its best performance of the season in the win over Pennsylvania College of Technology last week, the Elmira College women's basketball team witnessed its worst outing Wednesday against SUNY Cortland.
The Red Dragons more than doubled-up the Soaring Eagles en route to a lopsided 39-point win, 76-37.
The 37 points scored are the fewest for the Soaring Eagles since February 13th of last season. That contest, however, was merely a 49-36 defeat at the hand of Stevens Institute of Technology.
As a team, Elmira finished a lackluster 26.3 percent (15-for-57) from the field and only 11.1 percent (2-for-18) from beyond the arc, both percentages marking season lows. Those numbers, combined with EC 20 turnovers, allowed SUNY Cortland to turn a once competitive game into a big win.
Through the first 10 minutes of action, the Soaring Eagles found themselves down by only two points.
Meghan Loya '16 sunk Elmira's first field goal midway through the low-scoring first quarter, trimming the SUNY Cortland advantage to 4-3. Following a trey from SUNY Cortland's Kristy Vitucci,
Danielle Cleary '18 made her only three-point attempt of the night to make it 7-6.
Allie Olsen '16 then scored EC's final two points of the first quarter with approximately 45 seconds left in the period to cut Cortland's four-point lead in half, 10-8.
While totaling the scores from the first and fourth quarters would result in only a two-point advantage for the Red Dragons, Cortland outscored Elmira 53-to-16 in the second and third quarters combined.
The home squad the second quarter with a 10-2 run to separate from the Soaring Eagles, and by the halftime intermission, the Red Dragons had pulled ahead by 21 points, 36-15. It didn't get any better after the break, as Elmira came up empty on its first nine possessions of the second half while the deficit widened. The Red Dragons led by as much as 41 points in the second half.
Inside the Box- Elmira shot 15-for-57 (26.3 percent) from the field and only 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) from three-point range.
- The Soaring Eagles were out-rebounded 47-to-31.
- Neither team made many trips to the foul line; EC finished 5-for-7 while SUNY Cortland went 7-for-11 from the charity stripe.
- Cleary led EC with nine points and seven rebounds, the latter also representing a game high.
- Loya was 3-for-4 from the field and scored six points.
- SUNY Cortland's Stephanie Rice made four of her five three-point attempts en route to a game-high 18 points.
News and Notes- Elmira's 37 points scored are the fewest since February 13th, 2015, a 49-36 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology.
- The 39-point margin of defeat is the worst since the Soaring Eagles lost to St. John Fisher by 41 points, 79-38, on February 6th, 2015.
- Cleary's streak of five games with 20-plus points was snapped and her streak of games with double-digit points was halted at eight. Her last game with less than 10 points was on February 17, 2015 at Houghton College.
- Cleary has made at least one three-pointer in the last six games.
- SUNY Cortland was now won 15 consecutive games against Elmira in the all-time series.
- EC has lost all four games so far this season when it committed at least 20 turnovers.
- The Soaring Eagles blocked a season-high four shots.
