Geneva, NY -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team saw a 3-0 lead turn into a one-goal game late in the third period against host William Smith College, but the Soaring Eagles would knock-in an empty net goal in the final minute of play to hold on for a 4-2 victory, as the Purple and Gold clinched home ice throughout the ECAC West Conference Tournament. For Elmira, this year's conference tournament marks the first time since the 2008-09 season that the ECAC West Conference Tournament Champions will be crowned at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
Elmira's two-goal win completes the season series sweep against the Herons, as the Soaring Eagles improve to 21-1-1 on the season and a perfect 16-0-0 in conference play. With the win, Elmira has tallied victories in 12 consecutive games and pushes their unbeaten streak to 15, the second longest active streak in the nation.
The Soaring Eagles were led on offense by a pair of three-point performances from
Ashton Hogan '15 and
Cassidy Delainey '15. Hogan scored a pair of goals, one on the power play and the other on an empty net, and assisted on one other goal. Hogan's two goals ups her season total to 30, putting her in sole possession of third place on Elmira's single-season record list. She also becomes the first Elmira skater to register a 30-goal season since the late Soaring Eagle great, Laura Hurd '05, when she scored 33 in the 2002-03 season.
Delainey tallied one goal, the eventual game-winner, and assisted on two others. Classmate
Brooke Wilgosh '15 also turned in a multi-point game, as she registered two assists, giving her 25 on the season, the second-most in the country only to teammate
Ashley Ryan '15. Wilgosh also increased her season point total to 28, the most of any defenseman in the nation.
Additionally, Ryan picked up one assist tonight, giving the AHCA All-American 38 helpers on the season. Her 38 assists puts Ryan in sole possession of second place on Elmira's single-season record holder list, just three assists shy of tying current record holder, Charissa Gawant '05, who set the mark in the 2001-02 season.
Last night's three-point performer,
Erin Weston '15, opened tonight's scoring with her seventh goal of the season, 6:15 into the first period. Ryan and
Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 were credited with assists on the game's opening goal. Elmira would go on to outshoot William Smith 13-to-2 in the period, but the Herons' defense would hold steady as the game remained 1-0 entering the first intermission.
Elmira's continuous pressure on offense paid off in the second period as the Soaring Eagles once again outshot the Herons, 18-to-6, allowing EC to score a pair of goals off of those 18 shots. Hogan scored the first of two goals in the period, on the power play, at the 11:05 mark. Wilgosh and Delainey picked up assists on the goal. Just under two minutes later, Delainey scored a goal of her own, a career-best 18th of the season. Hogan and Wilgosh tallied assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
In the third, William Smith staged a comeback, scoring back-to-back goals within the first seven minutes of the period. Kiley Fewster scored the first of two goals just 20 seconds into the period on a shorthanded effort. Then, at the 6:39 mark, Fewster setup teammate Dori Craig for her third goal of the season, cutting the Elmira lead to one.
The Soaring Eagles clung to their one-goal lead for the majority of the period until the 19:02 mark, when Hogan scored her national-leading 30th goal of the season on an empty net, sealing Elmira's 4-2 win. Delainey and
Olivia Nystrom '16 were credited with assists on the go-ahead goal.
Elmira starting netminder,
Kelcey Crawford '18, made 16 saves tonight as she improved to 8-0-0 on the season.
The Purple and Gold will put their unblemished conference record on the line next Saturday, February 21st when Elmira hosts No. 9 Oswego State for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
