Men’s Volleyball Splits a Pair at the Nazareth College Quad-Match

Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (11-8, 1-1 UVC) won the first match of the day 3-1 against Medaille College (4-8) before falling 3-2 to Ramapo College (6-8). Erik Griffin '16 led on offense for the Soaring Eagles with 40 total kills on the day while Carlos Faccio '16 totaled 91 assists today.

Elmira 3, Medaille 1 – 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19


The Purple and Gold jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead against Medaille, however, the Maverics inched their way back and trailed by just one, 19-18. Elmira then scored the next three points to take a 22-18 lead. Medaille regrouped and battled back, however, the EC men would close out the set, 25-22.

The Maverics jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the second set. Elmira then went on a 6-0 run to trail, 19-18. EC then went on a 4-3 run to tie the game up at 21-21, however, Medaille would close the second set with a 4-1 run to win 25-22 and tie the sets up at 1-1.

Elmira started the third set with a 16-10 run, however, the Maverics would score the sets next four points to trail 16-14. Both teams battle the rest of the set, but EC would go on to win the set, 25-20 and take a 2-1 set lead.

The Soaring Eagles took a 12-6 lead early in the fourth set. Medaille responded with five straight to trail 12-11, causing an Elmira timeout. After the short break, both teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the set, but in the end it would be the EC men taking the fourth set, 25-19 and the 3-1 match win.

Griffin led on offense with 18 kills while Matthew Buffum '18 also tallied double-digit kills matching a career-high of 11. Faccio led the EC men in assists with 40 while Rob Shade '15 and Faccio both led on defense with seven digs apiece.

Match Two Recap
Elmira 2, Medaille 3 – 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 13-15


The EC men took a quick 5-0 lead in the first set, however, Ramapo would respond with a 3-1 run to trail 6-3. The Purple and Gold then went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-4 lead. Both teams traded points until Elmira led 24-14 and the Roadrunners went on a 5-0 run to trail 24-18. Mark Kawecki '17 would end the set with a kill, giving Elmira a 25-18 win.

Both teams went back in forth in the second set, as the score was tied 14 times and neither team was able to build a lead greater than two points. With the score tied at 23-23, Griffin would make two kills in a row to give the EC men the 25-23 set win and 2-0 set lead.

The next set was close as well, until the set was at 12 apiece and Ramapo scored three points to go up 15-12, causing an EC timeout. Follow the timeout, Ramapo went on a 5-3 run to go up 20-16. The Roadrunners lead would prove too much as the Purple and Gold fell in the third set, 25-21.

The Roadrunners kept the momentum in the fourth set as Ramapo took a 7-3 lead. The Roadrunners' took control of the set as they eventually took a 23-14 lead. Elmira regrouped and responded with four points to trail 23-18, however, Ramapo would score the set's next two points to win 25-18 and tie the sets up at 2-2.

Ramapo took a 9-6 lead early in the fifth set, however, the Purple and Gold battled back to trail by just one, 10-9. The Roadrunners' slight lead was too much for the Soaring Eagles as the EC men fell 15-13 in the fifth set and 3-2 in the match.

Griffin led on the offensive side of the court with 22 kills while Faccio set up the attack with 52 assists. Shade led on defense with 18 digs while Buffum tallied four total blocks.

The Purple and Gold will compete next on February 25th when the EC men host No. 6 Nazareth College at 7:00 p.m.
