Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Late Rally Comes Up Short as Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Neumann

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Pine Valley, NY --
The Elmira College men's ice hockey team came out on the wrong end of a 7-4 decision against Neumann University.  Elmira trailed by four goals entering the third period and managed to cut that lead to two, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Soaring Eagles dropped to 9-9-3 on the year and 3-6-2 in ECAC West Conference play.

Tonight's game was a physical one, as 21 penalties were called for a combined total of 61 penalty minutes, producing 18 power-play chances between the two teams.

Although Elmira did not get the outcome they desired tonight, the Soaring Eagles should take solace in the play of Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16, who continues to produce at a high level.  The third-year forward logged four points on one goal and three assists, tying his season-high for points as well as assists, solidifying his spot at No. 6 in the nation in points per game (1.52).

Michael Collins '16 was Elmira's only other multi-point scorer tonight, finishing with two points on one goal and an assist.

Neumann took a 1-0 lead 6:39 into the first period but Elmira responded a little over three minutes later on a goal by Liam Burtt '16, his second of the season, tying the game at 1-1.  ten Vaanholt and Collins were both credited with assists on Burtt's goal.

Then, at the 14:31 mark of the first period, Elmira took their only lead of the game, thanks to a power-play goal by ten Vaanholt that came just 10 seconds after EC returned to full strength.  Travis Meyer '17 began the scoring play by taking the puck into the attacking zone on a 3-on-2 odd-man rush.  Meyer dumped the puck off to Tommy Sumi '16 in the high slot, who would fire a slap shot towards net, only to set it redirected by ten Vaanholt into the back of the net for the score.

Elmira's 2-1 lead was short lived however, as the Knights of Neumann punched-in a shorthanded goal to even things at two apiece.  Neumann's shorthanded goal would hold up through the end of the first period as the game remained even entering the first intermission.

The major turning point in tonight's game occurred in the second period when Neumann outscored Elmira, 4-to-0, taking a commanding 6-2 lead into the third period.  All four of Neumann's goals came on even strength, including the game-winner scored by Shayne Morrissey at the 14:33 point of the period.

EC came out in the third period with high hopes of making a comeback, and it looked as though the Soaring Eagles were going to pull it off, especially with the offensive production they saw in the first six minutes of the period.

Just 1:01 into the third, Michael Collins '16 scored a power-play goal, trimming the Neumann lead to three.  Brian Depp '16 and ten Vaanholt picked up assists on the man-up goal.

Less than five minutes later, Greg Whittle '16 scored his eighth goal of the season, making it a two-goal game with just over 14 minutes to play in regulation.  Whittle's goal was setup by a great initial pass by Rob Simpson '16 out of EC's defensive zone, a pass that fluttered through the air and onto the stick of ten Vaanholt just inside Neumann's blue line.  With the puck in the high slot, ten Vaanholt would split a pair of defenders with a pass to Whittle, who would make a move to the right before beat the Neumann goalie stick-side for the score.

Unfortunately, this would be as close as Elmira would get to Neumann as the Knights tallied an empty netter late in the third period, sealing a 7-4 victory.

Elmira will look to bounce back tomorrow as the Soaring Eagles host Neumann for the second game of their two-game set.  Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
