Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team avenged their Friday night loss to Neumann University tonight, earning an all-important 6-5 ECAC West Conference victory. With the win, Elmira improves to 10-9-3 on the season and earns their fourth ECAC West Conference win of the year.
It only took 1:29 for the 999 fans in attendance to see the game's first goal as
Alexander Taulien '17 put the Soaring Eagles ahead 1-0. Taulien wrapped around the Neumann net, and buried the shot for the goal, beating the opposing netminder on the far post.
Andrew Ciampichini '15 and
Tommy Sumi '16 were credited with assists on the goal.
Sumi extended Elmira's lead to 2-0 as he scored his eighth goal of the season at the 11:01 mark of the period. The scoring play started with Ciampichini creating a 3-on-3 rush but his pass to Taulien put the numbers in EC's favor, giving Elmira a 2-on-1 advantage. With the puck in the high slot, Taulien dumped it off to Sumi who one-timed it into the upper left twine of the net for the goal. Sumi's goal would hold up through the first period as Elmira took their two-goal advantage into the first intermission.
Neumann's Casey Rogers cut the Elmira lead to one at the 7:05 mark of the second period but a little over two minutes later, Taulien would score his seventh power-play goal of the season, putting Elmira back on top by two goals. Taulien scored his goal by burying a precise wrist shot into the upper left corner of the net, beating the Neumann goalie over the right shoulder for the score.
Michael Collins '16 was credited with an assist on the goal as he sent a pass from the right slot to Taulien for the score.
The Knights of Neumann responded late in the second period, as Doug Rose tallied an unassisted goal, trimming the EC lead to one. The score remained 3-2 through the second period.
A Neumann penalty in the early stages of the third period proved to be costly, as
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 knocked-in a power-play goal, his team-leading 11th goal of the season. The scoring play was a pretty one as ten Vaanholt took on two defenders, splitting the two by faking a shot and juking the other, leaving him with a one-on-one with the Neumann goaltender. ten Vaanholt continued to show off his stick skills as he deked the goalie, and beat him for the score, putting Elmira ahead 4-2. Taulien and Collins picked up assists on the goal.
Neumann responded once again, this time with a Shane Topf unassisted goal, making it yet again a one-goal game.
However, the Soaring Eagles would score a pair of unanswered goals to take their largest lead of the night, a three-goal lead. The first of two back-to-back goals was scored by Collins, his ninth of the season, at the 10:51 mark of the period. Collins' goal came after he won an in-zone faceoff, as the puck found its way to
Rob Simpson '16 at the blue. From there, Simpson fired a shot on net, which would be saved, but the rebound went right to Collins who buried the shot for the score.
Carter Shinkaruk '16 scored the next goal, at the 16:37 mark of the period, putting Elmira ahead 6-3. The scoring play was setup by Ciampichini who, on the rush, dumped the puck between his legs to Shinkaruk in the high slot. From there, Ciampichini would screen the goalie, allowing Shinkaruk to wrist-in the shot for a goal.
Trailing by three goals, their largest deficit of the weekend, the Knights eyed a comeback and nearly did as they scored two unanswered goals at the 17:38 and 18:46 marks of the period. However, Neumann's comeback effort proved to be too little, too late, as the Soaring Eagles skated away with a 6-5 victory.
EC starting netminder,
Sal Magliocco '17 finished with 40 saves, his second 40-plus save effort of the year, as his tallied his sixth win of the 2014-15 season.
Elmira will look to build on tonight's win next weekend when the Soaring Eagles travel to take on ECAC West Conference foe, Utica College, for a pair of ECAC West Conference games. The first of two games is scheduled for Friday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m.
