Men’s Ice Hockey Edged By Utica

College Hockey Stats Box Score

Utica, NY --
The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (10-10-3, 4-7-2 ECAC West) fell, 3-2, to Utica College (11-8-4, 4-7-2 ECAC West) in an ECAC West matchup. Carter Shinkaruk '16 led the Soaring Eagles with a goal and an assist while Sal Magliocco '17 made 35 saves in the loss.

The first period was relatively quiet as only one goal of the game's five total goals was scored and only one of the 14 total penalties was called. With only 2:08 left in the first stanza, Shinkaruk scored the first goal of the game after receiving the puck from Greg Whittle '16 to give Elmira the 1-0 lead. The Pioneers, despite trailing, outshot the Purple and Gold in the first, 14-6.

With 2:56 left in the second period, Louie Educate of Utica evened the game at 1-1. Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 answered back just 21 seconds later to give the EC men a 2-1 lead. Whittle and Shinkaruk were credited with the assists on the play. However, the Purple and Gold's lead would be short-lived as the Pioneers would capitalize on a powerplay opportunity with 31 seconds left in the period to tie the game back up at two. Elmira edged Utica in shots in the second period, 13-11.

Utica dominated the shot total in the third period, putting 13 shots on target compared to EC's four, and that discrepancy helped the Pioneers net the game-winner. Recording the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal, was Alex Brissette. EC pulled Magliooco with 1:21 left in the game, but were unable to net the equalizer, falling 3-2 to the Pioneers.

The Purple and Gold will take on Utica College again tomorrow, February 14th at 7:00 p.m. in another ECAC West game. The winner of the game will clinch the fourth seed, and a home playoff game, in the ECAC West playoffs.
