Potsdam, NY -- The Elmira College women's soccer team was defeated on the road, 2-0, by Clarkson University Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field in the first half of its two-game weekend road trip.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring in the 17th minute on a free kick by Summer Gillespie to pull ahead 1-0. It would remain a one-goal affair until the 65th minute when Nikki Carfi carried the ball into the 18-yard box and set up Lauren Flynn with a one-timer. Flynn slid into Carfi's through-ball just outside the six-yard box, pushing it inside the left post and over the head of a diving

Maddie Miller '17 nearly knotted the game at 1-1 coming out of the halftime intermission. Only 33 seconds into the period she put a shot on goal from the right side, but Clarkson goalkeeper Anna Demasi was there for the stop.
The Golden Knights would fire eight of their 14 shots on goal in the second half, forcing Banner to make five saves in the period. She made four of those saves in less than a five-minute span between the 55th and 60th minutes. On one Clarkson possession, Banner dove to her left to deny one shot attempt and then quickly jumped to her feet to save the rebound.
Turning PointThe offenses of the Soaring Eagles and Golden Knights each generated two shots on goal inside the first 13 minutes of the game. Clarkson cashed in on a free kick by Gillespie in the 17th minute to break the stalemate and grab a lead it would never relinquish.
