CANTON, N.Y. -- A SUNY Canton goal in the 102nd minute proved to be the difference, as the Elmira College men's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, by the host Kangaroos in double overtime Tuesday night.
Despite the brisk North Country temperatures, the Roos maintained a relentless attack, which resulted in a sizable 22-to-8 advantage in shots over the Soaring Eagles. While the high volume of shots didn't immediately generate scores, Canton continued to string together quality looks until it broke through in the 53rd minute.
After playing to a scoreless draw at the half, Canton ended the stalemate off of a Kyle Smith corner kick. His entry found Mouhamadou Cisse inside the box, and the sophomore headed the ball past EC's
Jordan Hodlofski '17, who made his collegiate debut in goal following the halftime break.
The 1-0 lead remained intact until
Tony Barraco '18 knotted the game in the 71st minute.
Andrew Spitznogle '19 picked up the assist, as he lofted the ball towards the box from the left sideline to Barraco, who was able to finish for his second goal of the season.
The final 19-and-a-half minutes of play saw both sides frantically searching for the winner to avoid the extra sessions. EC's best chance came within the final four minutes of regulation, as
Donte Donegal '18 fired a shot from inside the box that was thwarted by the left post. On the other end of the field, Canton's Smith missed a shot wide right from point-blank range just over a minute later.
Smith would make good in double overtime, however. Fellow sophomore Josh Geller tapped the ball through traffic to Smith in the middle of the field, who corralled the ball on his first touch and volleyed it into the upper right corner on his second for the winner.
Turning Point
The majority of the prime scoring chances on Tuesday night were recorded within the Canton attacking zone, but Donegal's near-goal in the 87th minute was as good as they came. From the left side of the box, he turned and let loose a shot that flew just left of its target and ricocheted off of the post. If Donegal was able to direct the ball just a few more inches to the right, it would have surely gone down as the game-winner, sealing a come-from-behind road victory.
