ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Elmira College field hockey fell to Nazareth College 3-1 after starting the match on fire, but were unable to hold the momentum for the entire match on Saturday in Rochester, New York.
The Purple and Gold started the game on a tear. In the first five minutes of the contest, the Soaring Eagles peppered the Golden Flyers' goalie with three shots and two penalty corners. At the end that stretch,
Katie Carroll '18 put EC on the board in the sixth minute with an assist from
Alison Mariano '18. Saturday's goal was Carroll's second of the season.
The Golden Flyers struck quickly to tie the game four minutes later at, 1-1. Nazareth midfielder Kristina Back posted her first goal of the season in the ninth minute.Nazareth added a second goal in the 22nd minute to take the lead. Midfielder Jessica Livesey scored the decisive goal unassisted.Â
Elmira wasn't without their chances; the Soaring Eagles had a four-minute stretch in the second half that consisted of four shots and two penalty corners.
Sarah McCaffrey '18 had the best chance for EC to tie the game, but her shot in the 45 minute flew just over the crossbar of the cage. Â
EC's goalkeeper,
Julie Hockenberger '18, also finished with admirable stats. The Manlius, New York, native finished with 11 saves from the 22 Golden Flyers' shots. Eleven saves is tied for third-most for the junior goalie.
The Golden Flyers finished added one more goal in the 56th minute to ice the game away.
Turning Point
In that four-minute stretch in the second- half the Purple and Gold had their chances to tie the match up, but none of their opportunities found the back of the cage. The Soaring Eagles did not get any chances that were that good by the end of the match. If Elmira was able to score in that stretch the outlook of the game would have looked drastically different. Â
