Women's Volleyball Caps Off Home Quad in Thrilling Five-Set Loss

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team came up on the wrong end of a thrilling five-set match against Lycoming College in the EC Quad-Match finale at Speidel Gymnasium on Saturday. It would be the second of two losses on the day for the Soaring Eagles, who also fell to Hunter College, 3-1.

Sophomore standout Natalie Schieder '19 was unable to guide EC to victory in either match, despite a pair of outstanding double-double performances. The Alden, New York, native finished with a combined 33 kills and 25 digs on Saturday, and a total of 52 kills and 34 digs in the two-day tournament.

In the first set of Saturday's opener against the Hawks, the Soaring Eagles attacked with efficiency and committed just two errors. As a result, EC took the early lead by capturing a 25-20 first-set victory. However, the tide quickly turned in favor of Hunter, who swept the remaining sets. In the decisive fourth set, the Hawks hammered at a rate of .450, while in comparison, Elmira mustered a minus-.074 attack percentage.

Elmira battled admirably in the nightcap with the Warriors, as the Purple and Gold recovered from losses in the first and third sets to force a fifth. Even when Lycoming built a lead in the final set, the Soaring Eagles bounced back to tie the Warriors at 11-11. The spirited flock traded the following points with Lycoming to keep the set tied at 12-, 13- and 14-all, before the Warriors captured the final two points for the win.

  • Elmira recorded a .068 attack percentage, with 33 kills and 24 offensive errors.
  • On the other hand, Hunter hit at a .228 rate, with 45 kills and only 16 errors.
