EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. -- It was another tough outing for the Elmira College field hockey team this evening, as the Soaring Eagles suffered a 4-0 setback on the road to non-league foe, Wilkes University.
Â
Elmira was put on its heels right out the gate, as Wilkes opened the first 10 minutes of action by firing five shots, three of which found their target. EC starting netminder,
Julie Hockenberger '18, stopped each of the three attempts to keep the Colonels off of the scoreboard.
Â
However, Wilkes would not be denied for long, as the Colonels opened the game's scoring with 21:38 remaining in the first half on a tally from Marissa Surdy. A little over 10 minutes later Gianna Gennetts increased the Wilkes lead to two with her eighth goal of the season.
Â
Even with the two-goal lead, Wilkes continued their offensive assault in the second half with 19 shots, putting Hockenberger to work early and often. The third-year keeper performed valiantly in the cage, stopping 11 of Wilkes' 13 shots on goal.
Â
Maura Anistranski and Amanda Tredinnick scored the final two goals of the game for Wilkes, sealing the team's four-goal victory.
Â
Turning Point
The different in today's game was the offensive pressure Wilkes applied throughout the contest, which kept EC's defense busy for the full 70 minutes. Wilkes would go on to outshoot Elmira 29-to-0, neutralizing Elmira's offense while constantly blanketing the Soaring Eagle defense with shot-after-shot.
