PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- Elmira College field hockey drops an Empire 8 Conference tilt to Route 13 rival Ithaca College, 6-0, on Class of 2017 Recognition Day at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
In a special pre-match ceremony the members of the field hockey team recognized the four graduating seniors-
Cassidy Genco '17,
Julia Derco '17,
Emma Miklinski '17 and
Renata Lizak '17- for their hard work and dedication to the program over their years at Elmira.
The match started off slowly with neither team attempting a shot in the first four minutes of action. Bombers midfielder Amanda Schell scored the first goal of the contest in the fifth minute when she received a pass right in front of the cage and poked the ball past EC keeper Lizak.
The Bombers continued their attack, firing 11 more shots in the half. Lizak was up for the challenge in her first start of the season, making seven first half saves. The Purple and Gold defense held the Bombers scoreless for the next 40 minutes.
Ithaca scored its next goal in the 45th minute when Michaela Donohue received a pass in the arc and beat Lizak to the left side. Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, the floodgates were opened and the Bombers scored four more goals in the next 23 minutes.
The Purple and Gold were unable to get any offensive attack started. Elmira finished with four shots, one in the first half and two in the second. The best scoring chance for EC came from Derco in the 69th minute, when the senior defender took a pass from
Sarah McCaffrey '18 during a penalty corner and rifled a shot towards the cage, but Bombers keeper Katie Lass kicked the ball away for her only save of the contest. Â Â Â Â
Turning Point
The Soaring Eagles played the Bombers very tough for the first 44 minutes of action, keeping Ithaca to one early goal. However the Purple and Gold could not generate enough offense to mount a comeback. Once the Bombers scored their second goal in the 45th minute, it felt like the lead had grown too big for Elmira to start a comeback effort.
