Field Hockey Falls to Empire 8 Rival Stevens, 6-0

Score: Stevens Institute of Technology 6, Elmira College 0
Records: Stevens (8-5, 5-1 E8), Elmira (2-9, 0-5 E8)
Location: Murray Athletic Center – Pine Valley, N.Y.

PINE VALLEY, NY -- Elmira College field hockey could not capitalize on its few offensive chances in its 6-0 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology in Empire 8 Conference action on Sunday at the Murray Athletic Center.

The Soaring Eagles got out of the gate quickly with Julia Derco '17 getting the first scoring chance of the game. Derco received a pass from Sarah McCaffrey '18 off of a penalty corner and rifled a shot towards the cage, but a Ducks' defender deflected the shot away before it went in.

Stevens got the first tally of the game a little more than two minutes later when Victoria Alvarez gained control of a lofted pass from the top of the arc and buried it into the back of the cage.

Over eight minutes later the Ducks added another goal, when Regan Littell poked a loose ball in front of Julie Hockenberger '18 past the goalkeeper for the score.

The Purple and Gold did not give up even though they were down. Alison Mariano '18 would get two chances before the half ended, but the first rolled wide of the cage and the other was saved by Stevens' starting goalie Emily Stukenborg.

Atu Machika '18 was also instrumental in the second-half trying to get the offense jump started. Machika got off two shots in the half. The first came three minutes into the half when the Machinga, Malawi, native controlled the ball into the middle of the arc and fired a shot that was ultimately saved by the Ducks' keeper. The second shot would roll wide of the cage. Machika was unable to extend her goal scoring streak to four straight matches.

The Ducks would add four more goals by the end of the game. Stevens used ball possession and offensive aggression to keep the Soaring Eagles scoreless. By the end of the match Stevens finished with 27 shots and Elmira finished with five.

Turning Point
The Purple and Gold did not give up even after they went down by three goals in the first-half. Elmira tried to get the offense going, but were unable to steal possession away from Stevens. After the fourth goal for the Ducks, EC would only get one more shot in the last 29 minutes of the match. With this lack of ball possession, the Soaring Eagles could not ramp up their offense for a comeback.
