RYE, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team lost its second ECAC West Conference game in as many days by dropping a hard-fought contest to Manhattanville College, 6-2, at the Playland Ice Casino on Saturday evening.
The action started quickly for Elmira, as freshman
Nick Ford '20 scored a power-play goal just over a minute into the contest. Ford, who received assists from
Tyler Theodoulou '18 and
Matthew Cuce '20, needed only nine seconds on the man-advantage to beat Manhattanville goalkeeper Tyler Feaver and give EC a 1-0 lead.
The Valiants answered quickly, scoring twice in the next five-and-a-half minutes of action to take a 2-1 lead. Nolan Marshall tied the game up at 1-1 with a goal at the 4:32 mark of the first period, and Matt Lippa gave the Valiants a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 6:08. Manhattanville added to its lead with another power-play goal midway through the first period, when Teagan Waugh capitalized on the extra-skater advantage to put the Valiants up 3-1.
After an electric first period, neither team was able to score in the second.
Sal Magliocco '17 played well in the second, saving all nine shots on goal from the Valiants to keep the deficit to only two goals heading into the third period.
Brothers Adam and Bryant Platt helped the Valiants stretch their lead to 4-1 early in the third period. Adam Platt's saved shot attempt rebounded to his brother in the slot and Bryan Platt just beat Magliocco to the left corner of the net.
EC once again used the power play to cut the Manhattanville lead in half. Following a penalty for too many men on the ice on the Valiants,
Connor Powell '20 buried a shot just over the shoulder of Feaver into the top right corner to reduce the deficit to 4-2.
Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, the Valiants added two more goals in the third period, the final being an empty-netter, to halt any comeback hopes for the Soaring Eagles and seal the conference victory.
Turning Point
As expected in the always-bitter rivalry between the Soaring Eagles and the Valiants, the special teams units from both squads would be put to work. While Elmira scored its two goals with the man advantage, the Purple and Gold finished just 2-for-10 on the power play. One of several missed opportunities included a 5-on-3 advantage late in the third period which Elmira needed to convert if it looked to come from behind. On the other hand, the Soaring Eagles surrendered 10 power-play opportunities to Manhattanville, and while the Valiants only scored thrice with the extra skater, that meant EC spent valuable minutes trying to kill off penalties instead of skating full-strength.
