Women's Basketball Suffers, 76-42, Loss to Guilford College

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Elmira College women's basketball team struggled in its, 76-42, loss to the host Guilford College Quakers in its second game of the Guilford College Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Lindsey Heaton '19 and Rachel Vespucci '19 paced the Elmira offense, with the pair scoring a team-high-tying nine points. For Heaton's performance over the weekend, 26 points, six rebounds and five assists, she was named to the Guilford College Classic All-Tournament Team. Vespucci also performed well on the boards, grabbing a career-best nine rebounds. Freshman forward Emily Breheny '20 also impressed, as she scored four points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.  

The Purple and Gold struggled to start the game, only scoring two points in the first seven minutes. Elmira made one shot from the field out of its first twelve. The Quakers would take advantage and raced out to a 20-7 lead after one.

EC's struggles continued in the second, as the Purple and Gold finished the half going 9-for-32 (28.1-percent) from the field. On the other hand, Guilford shot 21-for-36 (58.3-percent) from the floor. By the end of the second half, the Quakers led 42-19.

After the first 30 minutes of action, the Quaker lead had grown to 69-32.The game was essentially decided by the start of the fourth, as Guilford emptied the bench to get some of its younger players some game action.

The Quakers would continue their strong play in the final quarter as Guilford cruised to a 76-42 victory.

Turning Point
The Purple and Gold were unable to get their offense going at any point in the contest, as EC finished the game shooting 28.1-percent from the field. As the Elmira offense stalled, the Quaker's offense flourished, as Guilford finished the match up shooting 53.1-percent from the floor. The Quaker's took advantage of the Purple and Gold's struggles to race out to an early lead that EC could not overcome.
