ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team will be looking to open ECAC West Conference play with a pair of victories, as the Soaring Eagles take on the two newest members of the league this weekend in Stevenson University and Lebanon Valley College. Elmira faces the Mustangs of Stevenson tonight at 7:00 p.m., before taking on the Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley the following evening at 7:00 p.m.
WEEKEND OVERVIEW
- After a 0-2-0 season-opening weekend of games against SUNYAC power, and now 12th-ranked Oswego State, the Soaring Eagles open ECAC West Conference play on the road against Stevenson University and Lebanon Valley College (Nov. 4 & Nov. 5).
- Friday's conference opener against the Mustangs of Stevenson marks the first meeting between the two programs.
- Saturday's trek to Hershey, Pennsylvania, for an ECAC West contest with Lebanon Valley will be the two team's first meeting since the 2009-10 season, a year the two squads faced each other three times; Elmira won all three games, including the final one on January 23rd by a 6-3 final score.
INTRODUCING CONNOR POWELL
- Rookie Connor Powell made is home debut last Saturday night at the Murray Athletic Center and dazzled in front of a crowd of 1,100 fans by logging three points on two goals and one assist.
- Powell's three-point total is the highest by a freshman skater since Alexander Taulien '18 produced four on a trio of tallies and one helper in a 7-6 overtime win over Utica College on January 31, 2014.
- The Merrimack, New Hampshire, native also became Elmira's first multi-goal scorer of the year.
STEVENSON AT A GLANCE
- The Mustangs could not have asked for a better start to the 2016-17 season, after picking up back-to-back wins over Morrisville State to enter Friday's contest with an unblemished 2-0-0 record.
- Rookie Nick Bohatiuk and junior transfer Mike Davis led the way for the Mustangs with five points apiece during the season-opening weekend of games.
- Both of Stevenson's wins have come on its home ice at the Reisterstown Sportsplex, an arena where the Mustangs play their first four games of the season.
LEBANON VALLEY AT A GLANCE
- The Dutchmen went 0-1-1 in their first two games of the year against Stonehill College; Lebanon Valley dropped its season opener 3-2, before skating to a 3-3 overtime tie the next night.
- Second-year skater Brett Johnson leads the team with three points on two goals and one assist; all three points came in Lebanon Valley's 3-3 overtime tie against Stonehill.
- Lebanon Valley is a very young team that saw 19 players make their collegiate debuts a week ago, with the exception of PJ Hefferin, Matthew Reno and Johnson.
LOOKING AHEAD
Elmira continues its four-game road trip the following weekend with a pair of conference games, beginning with a Friday, November 11th, matchup with Neumann University at 7:00 p.m.
