Women's Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw Against SUNY New Paltz

Records: Elmira (0-3-1), SUNY New Paltz (1-4-1)
Location: Newburgh, NY - Kaplan Field

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team saw a two-goal lead slip away in the second half, but held on to record a 2-2 draw against SUNY New Paltz in the second round of the Mount Saint Mary College Tournament Saturday afternoon.

It was a much-needed breakout performance for the Elmira offense, which had been shutout over EC's last two contests. The Soaring Eagles doubled their shot total from their previous two games combined by releasing a season-high 10 attempts on Saturday.

After nearly 30 minutes of scoreless action, the Soaring Eagles broke through with two goals in a span of 6:42 to take a 2-0 lead. Sara Kazerouni '18 opened the scoring, as she chipped in the ball from the top of the box off of a feed from Jordyn Rousselle '18 in the 30th minute. Then in the 37th minute, the Purple and Gold doubled the advantage when Maddie Miller '17 ripped a shot from about 18 yards out into the upper-left corner past New Paltz's freshman keeper, Angela Ratka.

The Hawks battled back to knot the game in the second half, however, with goals in the 57th and 67th minutes. New Paltz continued to threaten in the attacking zone as it looked to complete the comeback; the Hawks registered five more shots before the end of regulation. EC goalkeeper Amanda Banner '17 saved two of those shots to preserve the tie and force overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Soaring Eagles found themselves with a prime scoring opportunity, but they couldn't cash it in. Kazerouni had a shot saved in the 97th minute, followed by another from Rousselle that was blocked. Then Celina Spitznogle '19 put the ball in play with a pair of corner kicks, but was unable place either in position for a game-winner.

Both goalies were tested in the second overtime session. Banner was forced to make a pair of saves, while she watched a header from Monica Rouse off of a corner entry sail high over the crossbar in the 107th minute. On the other end of the field, New Paltz backup netminder Katelyn Cordero, who relieved Ratka after halftime, denied Lindsay Proulx '18 with a clutch save with just over a minute left on the clock.

Turning Point
The Soaring Eagles turned their best performance of the season in the draw against SUNY New Paltz. Despite nearly 100 minutes of outstanding play, the Hawks took advantage of an approximately 10-minute gap between the 57th and 67th minutes, where they were able to secure the equalizing tallies. The feathered foes played neck-and-neck throughout the remainder of regulation and overtime, but neither team was able to produce a game-winning goal before the final whistle.
