UTICA, N.Y. -- It was a tale of two halves for the Elmira College women's soccer team, which fell to Utica College, 4-1, on the road in Saturday's Empire 8 Conference opener.
The Soaring Eagles dominated time of possession in the first half and outshot the host Pioneers by a staggering 14-to-1 margin. EC's 14 shots in the opening period were alone enough to mark a single-game high for the Purple and Gold in 2016.
EC peppered shot after shot at UC goalkeeper Allison Wagner, who needed seven saves in the first half to limit the Soaring Eagles to a single tally. That goal was scored by none other than
Jordyn Rousselle '18, who extended her point streak to four consecutive games in the 32nd minute. Her shot from approximately 20 yards out sailed just over the outstretched fingertips of Wagner and into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Despite a breakout effort from the Elmira offense in the first 45 minutes of action, the Soaring Eagles struggled to find any success in the second half, as the game suddenly took a 180-degree turn. The once fruitless Utica squad went on to outshoot EC, 11-to-3, in the second half. The Pioneers tacked on three second-half goals; on the other hand, the Purple and Gold did not release a shot after the 51st minute.
Turning Point
Although the score was equal at halftime, 1-1, the box score illustrated a game that heavily favored Elmira. While Utica did score on its only shot attempted in the first half, the Soaring Eagles held a significant advantage in shots taken, and it appeared to be only a matter of time before those shots tickled the twine. That would be far from the case, however, as EC's offense went cold and Utica fired up a red-hot attack that guided the Pioneers to victory with a trio of scores in the second half.
