ALFRED, N.Y. -- Elmira College's 11-game unbeaten streak against Empire 8 Conference foe Alfred University came to an end on Saturday, as the Soaring Eagles women's soccer team was edged, 3-2, by the Saxons.
The Purple and Gold fought back from a pair of one-goal deficits to draw the game even in both the first and second halves.
Sara Kazerouni '18 was the first to score for the Soaring Eagles, doing so with her third goal of the season in the 33rd minute.
Less than seven minutes later, however, the Saxons regained a 2-1 lead when Kate Christiansen made good on a penalty kick. Kazerouni had a chance to tie the game once again in the 42nd minute, but her shot was saved by AU goalie Sammy Jo Shanahan.
Freshman
Maddie Farrell '20 and junior
Kerri Clark '18 each picked up their first career points with the Soaring Eagles shortly after the intermission. Farrell tied the game at 2-all with her first collegiate goal in the 51st minute and Clark was credited with her first career assist.
In the 62nd minute, the Saxons took the lead for good on Lexi Riffelbach's second goal of the afternoon. Elmira's best chance to even the score came off of the foot of Clark a mere 20 second later, but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
Turning Point
Clark, now in her second season with the EC women's soccer team, registered her first point as a Soaring Eagle with an assist on the goal score by rookie
Maddie Farrell. The former SUNY Cortland Red Dragon nearly followed that up with her first collegiate goal, but her shot was high and deflected off of the crossbar. That shot would have evened the score at 3-3 with approximately 28 minutes remaining, setting the Soaring Eagles up for an opportunity to at least play into overtime and potentially keep the unbeaten streak alive.
