PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team was shut out by the visiting Owls of Bryn Mawr College on Monday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center, as the Soaring Eagles came up on the short end of a 1-0 non-conference decision.
Although both sides recorded six shots, the two teams combined to place only five shots on goal throughout the entire 70-minute affair. Despite being held off of the scoreboard, the Soaring Eagles outshot the Owls in the first half, 6-to-1, but Bryn Mawr's lone attempt in the opening half proved to be the difference.
In the 15th minute, Lydia Fisher inserted a penalty corner from the left of the goal directly to Sara Rilatt at the top of the 12-meter arc. From there, Rilatt took a hard swing and drove the ball into the lower left corner of the cage for the eventual game-winning goal.
Elmira looked to respond less than a minute later with a penalty corner of its own, but the shot off the stick of
Emily Selbert '20 was saved by Bryn Mawr goalie Angela Meng. In the 25th and 30th minutes, respectively,
Janie Kempf '21 and
Atu Machika '18 each had shots blocked following penalty corners. Kempf tested Meng again in the 31st minute, but the Owls' keeper was once again there for the denial.
Bryn Mawr continued to dominate time of possession in the second half, which allowed the Owls to register significant advantages in both shots, 5-to-0, and penalty corners, 7-to-0, in the final period. EC goalie
Julie Hockenberger '18 made two saves in the second half to keep the Soaring Eagles within striking distance, but the Purple and Gold were unable to string together passes or make any runs in the offensive zone to threaten the opposing defense.
