HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team suffered a 4-1 setback to Empire 8 Conference foe Houghton College on Saturday afternoon at Burke Field in Houghton, New York.
The Highlanders came out of the gates firing, as they tallied eight shots in the first 15:54 of the bout. This constant pressure finally broke through the EC defense in the 16th minute. The Highlanders' Tanya Hatton received an Ashley Hughes pass in the middle of the arc that she was able to deflect just pass the Soaring Eagles' starting keeper,
Julie Hockenberger '18.
Houghton continued to push, as it scored two more goals in the next 11 minutes. Strikes from Marissa Hollinger and Caitlin Jennings gave the Highlanders a 3-0 advantage just 26:53 into the contest.
Before the end of the first half, Sierra Kennedy extended Houghton's lead to four goals, 4-0, with her fifth tally of the season. In total, this offensive barrage led to a 20-to-3 Highlanders advantage in shots during the first half.
The Soaring Eagles were able to keep the second half much closer, as they were outshot by a much smaller three-shot margin, 5-2. One of those two shots came off of the stick of
Alison Mariano '18, who buried a strike past Houghton's Elizabeth Piszker for her team-high-tying sixth goal of the season. Fellow senior
Katie Carroll '18 was credited with an assist on the play, as she fed Mariano the ball on the breakaway tally.
In her 35 minutes in goal, sophomore keeper
Tina O'Donnell '20 made two saves and did not allow a goal by the home team.
Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, Mariano's score would be their only one of the day, which sealed their sixth E8 loss of the season.
