ELMIRA, N.Y. -- After earning a pair of signature wins over nationally-ranked opposition, the No. 2/2-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to take on the Cougars of Chatham University. EC opens the two-game set on Friday, December 1, with a 7:00 p.m. United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) showdown, before closing out the series the following afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. bout. Both games will take place at the Alpha Ice Complex.
LAST TIME OUT: The Soaring Eagles are fresh off of winning the ultra-competitive UNO Classic Tournament, hosted by Plattsburgh State. Elmira opened the two-day tournament with a 4-1 drubbing of No. 6/6-ranked Middlebury, before dispatching the host Cardinals of Plattsburgh State by a 4-2 final score on their home ice. Senior netminder
Kelcey Crawford '18 stole the show in the championship game against Plattsburgh, as she produced an EC record-setting 62 saves in a winning effort. Crawford, who was named the Tournament MVP, became the first Soaring Eagle netminder to amass 60-plus saves in a single game and surpassed former record holder, Lisa Marshall '14, by six saves. Rookie
Emma Crocker '21 had a breakout weekend with four points on a trio of goals, two of which held up as game-winners, and one assist.
Kristin Chivers '19 also had a solid showing over the weekend with three points on one goal and two assists, the second of which was the primary assist on EC's game-winning goal against Plattsburgh. Both Crocker and Chivers were named to the All-Tournament Team.
TEAM NATIONAL RANKINGS: At 7-0-0, it is not surprising that the Soaring Eagles rank among the top of several national statistical categories. Elmira ranks second in the country in scoring offense (6.57), scoring defense (0.71), scoring margin (5.68), penalty kill (96.6%), combined special teams (67.2%) and third in power-play efficiency (37.5%). Elmira is also one of just two teams in the entire country with an unblemished record; joining the Soaring Eagles with that honor is current No. 8/9-ranked Connecticut College (3-0-0), who boast a pair of wins against former No. 8/9-ranked Amherst.
SCOUTING CHATHAM: The Cougars opened the 2017-18 campaign with a five-goal win over Lebanon Valley, but hit a rough patch with five consecutive losses to UCHC affiliates, one of which did not count towards their league record, from November 4-19. However, Chatham got back on track last weekend with a pair of non-conference wins against Becker to bring the Cougars' overall record to 3-5-0 (0-4-0 UCHC). One of Chatham's strengths this season has been its penalty-kill unit, which has allowed just one power-play goal on 29 chances for a success rate of 96.6-percent, a mark that ranks third in the country. The Cougar penalty killers will be put to the test this weekend as they face the country's third-highest scoring power-play unit in Elmira. Kasandra Petersen has been the key cog in Chatham's offense with a team-leading 16 points on 10 assists and six goals, which is tied for the team lead. She owns five multi-point games this season and has produced at least one point in each of Chatham's eight games thus far. Backstopping the defensive efforts this year has been Sydney Isbell, who is 3-3-0 in six appearances in her senior season. She owns a 2.43 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY: Elmira has never tasted defeat against Chatham and enters the weekend with a 30-0-0 all-time record against the Cougars.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Soaring Eagles conclude the first half of their schedule next weekend with a pair of non-league games against Amherst at the Murray Athletic Center. The first of two games is slated for Saturday, December 9, at 7:00 p.m.
