AMHERST, Mass. – The Elmira College women's hockey team traveled to Amherst College for an NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal contest. The Soaring Eagles' strong season came to an end as they fell to the Mammoths, 3–0.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
An early power play for Amherst gave the Mammoths an opportunity, but EC successfully killed off the two minutes, allowing three shots that were all stopped by Olivia Last. The Soaring Eagles gained some momentum from the kill and generated a few chances, but the Amherst netminder stood tall. Both sides went into the locker room deadlocked at 0, with the Mammoths narrowly outshooting the Soaring Eagles, 15–12.
Elmira started the second period well, putting a flurry of shots on net and creating scoring chances. Another Amherst power play provided them with a breather, however, and after a successful kill by EC, the Mammoths quickly found the back of the net. A strong finish to the period saw Amherst outshoot Elmira 7–2 over the final seven minutes, as the Soaring Eagles went into the second intermission trailing 1–0.
Amherst started the final period on a power play and capitalized just 41 seconds in to double their advantage. Three minutes later, they extended their lead to three. EC tried to claw back, but strong goaltending and team defense from the Mammoths proved difficult to overcome. With seven minutes left, the Soaring Eagles pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker and generated some good opportunities, but could not find the back of the net, ultimately falling 3–0.
