Women's Lacrosse's Early Fight Comes Up Short in E8 Setback to Stevens

Score: Stevens Institute of Technology 20 – Elmira College 2
Records: Stevens (11-3, 6-0 E8), Elmira (3-8, 1-4 E8)
Location: De Baun Athletic Complex – Hoboken, N.J.

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team battled Stevens Institute of Technology tough to start in their Empire 8 Conference contest today in Hoboken, New Jersey, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to keep this momentum going throughout their 20-2 loss at the De Baun Athletic Complex.

The Ducks kicked off the scoring in the first half with a goal 47 seconds into the contest. EC answered with its first tally of the day with a strike from Rachel Grampp '18 at the 28:51 mark that knotted the score at 1-all.

Stevens continued this fast-paced opening half with its second goal in just over the first 1:30 of the game. The Ducks stretched out their lead with a tally from Kyra Bednarski at the 20:10 mark of the first half, which gave the home team a 3-1 advantage.

Elmira again battled back into the contest with a strike from Mae Dinh '18 a little over two minutes later.  Dinh created her own scoring opportunity by stripping a Stevens' player of the ball driving it past the Ducks' starting goalkeeper, Stephanie Schnelzer. With the strike, Elmira cut the margin to just one goal, 3-2.

Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, Stevens started to pull away following EC's second goal. In the final 45 minutes of the game, the Ducks scored 17-unanswered goals to take a commanding 20-2 advantage.  Elmira was held scoreless for the remainder of the bout, as it was resigned to the 18-goal road setback.

Turning Point
The Soaring Eagles biggest detriment was their inability to get shots in the contest. For the game, the Ducks held a commanding 33-to-6 advantage in shots in the game. This big of a differential in shots also represents a disadvantage in time of possession. Stevens capitalized on this time of possession advantage by setting up its offense and by getting better shots.
