ELMIRA, N.Y. --
The Elmira College women's soccer team dropped a hard fought contest in its season opener to visiting Ramapo College, 4-1. Elmira rookie Taylor Hanson '21 scored the team's lone goal of the evening in her collegiate debut, while Jordyn Rousselle '18 collected her first assist of the 2017 campaign. Rachel Grampp '18 turned away 13 shots in her debut between the posts for the Soaring Eagles.

Ramapo outshot Elmira 24-to-10 and also held a 7-to-2 lead in corner kicks. Ramapo's Nani Vizcaino led all players with three points on one goal and one assist. Liliann Vizcaino logged a pair of assists, while Gabrielle Gentilucci and Amber Hermanns added one goal apiece. Rounding out Ramapo's scoring was Sydney Kauffman, who produced one assist.

Neither team dominated possession in the first half, however, the Roadrunners were able to outshoot the Soaring Eagles by a wide margin, 12-3. Those extra opportunities helped the visitors take a 2-1 lead into the halftime break, as Ramapo found the back of the net in the 25th and 43rd minutes.

Ramapo's first tally was a result of bad luck for the Soaring Eagles, as a cross fed into the box was deflected by an Elmira defender and into the back of the cage for an own goal. However, Elmira answered 15 minutes later on a beautiful play by senior-freshman combo Rousselle and Hanson.

After drawing in a pair of defenders, Rousselle slid a well-placed throughball behind the Ramapo back line. Hanson raced past the Ramapo defenders, setting herself up with a one-on-one opportunity with Ramapo's netminder, Elizabeth Harvell, who came extremely far off her line to meet Hanson at the top of the 18-yard box. With Harvell closing in, Hanson toed a slow roller past the Roadrunner netminder that would eventually trickle into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute.

The tie lasted exactly three minutes, as the Roadrunners connected for their second tally of the game in the 43rd minute. A well-placed cross from Nani Vizcaino found Amber Hermanns unmarked in the left side of the box. Hermanns took one touch and tucked a curling shot into the right corner past an outstretched Grampp for the go-ahead goal. Hermanns' strike held up through the first half, as Ramapo marched into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

Ramapo added to its lead in the second half with a pair of goals in the 66th and 88th minute marks. The first was a sister-to-sister connection, as Liliann Vizcaino laid the ball off to big sister Nani Vizaino, who launched a shot from 25 yards out that clipped the crossbar on its way into the back of the net.

Nearly 22 minutes passed until the Roadrunners added to their lead to make it 4-1. The scoring play began with a feed from the Ramapo back line, which found Liliann Vizcaino just inside midfield. From there, Vizcaino laid off a one-touch pass along the sideline to Sydney Kauffman, who sent a cross over the top of Elmira's defense and to an unmarked Gabrielle Gentilucci. Gentilucci, who made her run from the complete opposite side of the field, was left with a one-on-one opportunity that she cashed in on by placing the ball into the side netting for the final score of the game.
