CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's golf team finished the opening day of the Martin-Wallace Invitational, hosted annually by SUNY Cortland at the Cortland Country Club, with its lowest round of the 2017 fall season.
The Soaring Eagles placed seventh out of the nine-team field on day one at the 5,807-yard, par-72 course with a cumulative score of 372 (+84). That score is seven strokes lower than the team's previous 18-hole low of 379, which the Purple and Gold recorded during both rounds of the Utica College Invitational last weekend.
EC boasts a pair inside the top-20 on the first-round leaderboard, led by
Meghan Fonfara '18 in a three-way tie for 11th. The Elma, New York, native finished 12-up on the day with an 84, the lowest round of her collegiate career. Saturday's score was one-stroke lower than her previous best, which she registered a week ago in the first round of the Utica College Invite. Joining Fonfara inside the top-20 is
Audrey Clarke '18, who is tied with five other golfers for 18th place. Clarke shot a 14-over-par 86, which is two strokes lower than her best round from last year's Martin-Wallace Invitational.
Alyssa Ogden '18 was Elmira's next-best finisher, as the Fairport, New York, native recorded a 99 (+27) in the first round. For the second straight round, classmate
Cassie Chun '18 carded a new career low, as she shaved two strokes off of her score from Tuesday's Elmira College Fall Invitational by turning in a 103 (+31). Junior
Sarah Hiltbrand '19 posted a 114 (+42), an 11-stroke improvement from the opening round of last year's tournament at the Cortland Country Club.
Ithaca College heads into Sunday's action in the lead with a team score of 320 (+32). Runner-up Le Moyne College trails the Bombers by a mere four stroke, while the host Red Dragons placed third with a 329 (+41). On the individual leaderboard, Cortland's Danielle Bambola (74, +2) boasts a one-stroke lead over Le Moyne's Bianca Cruz (75, +3) for the top spot.
