ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team begins the new year with a pair of games at the Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday, January 5-6, in Boston, Massachusetts. The Soaring Eagles kick off the event with a 3:30 p.m. showdown against Connecticut College on Friday at the Warrior Ice Arena, the new training and practice facility for the NHL's Boston Bruins.

LAST TIME OUT
It has been exactly one month since EC last took the ice against Bryn Athyn on December 5 at the Murray Athletic Center, where the Purple and Gold secured a 5-2 victory over the Lions. Elmira was led by sophomores
Connor Powell '20 (3a),
Nick Ford '20 (1g-2a) and
Matthew Cuce '20 (2g-1a), who all tallied three points in the victory. This contest marked the second time this season that the three linemates have posted at least three points in the same game, as the trio did so in the Purple and Gold's 7-4 victory over King's on November 4. Freshman forward
Joe Smith '21 also made his presence know in the win, netting the game-winner almost eight minutes into the third period, his first collegiate goal. In net,
Gennaro Anzevino '21 made 18 saves to earn his team-leading third victory.

KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE
Multiple Soaring Eagles extended their respective scoring streaks in the bout against the Lions. Leading the group was Ford, who has tallied a goal in five straight games, the longest streak of his career. The New Lennox, Illinois, native has scored in 10 of EC's 13 games this season and paces the country with 1.08 goals per game. Powell has posted at least one point in each of the last five bouts. Nationally, Powell is tied for second in assists (1.23) and is tied with Ford for seventh in points per game (1.23).

SCOUTING CONNECTICUT COLLEGE
The Camels have faced much adversity of late, going 1-5 in their last six games after starting the year 2-1. Connecticut's struggles may be traced back to its inability to stop opposing power-play units. The Camels rank ninth in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in penalty-kill percentage and have stopped just 75.7 percent of their foes' power-play opportunities. Despite this detriment, Connecticut has kept many of its games close with impressive goaltending by sophomore Connor Rodericks, who leads the team with six starts and has earned all three of the Camels' wins. Rodericks has been one of the most efficient goalies in the country, as he ranks fourth in Division III in save percentage (.947). On the offensive end of the ice, senior forward Chris Jellison paces the team with nine points on two tallies and seven assists. The main recipient of those assists is the team's leading scorer, Paul Capozzi. The freshman from Lake Forest, Illinois, paces the team with five goals.

CHALLENGE AHEAD
Following Friday's contest, Elmira's weekend will not get any easier, as the Soaring Eagles will have to challenge either the St. Thomas or Nichols. Both of these storied programs had strong 2016-17 campaigns, finishing with above-.500 records and making it to the semifinals of their respective conference tournaments. St. Thomas enters the invite with a 6-3-1 overall record after winning its last four games, while Nichols heads into the weekend with a 7-5-2 overall record. Either team will represent a welcomed challenge for the Soaring Eagles, as the Purple and Gold to improve upon their current 3-2-0 record in non-conference action. Â
Â
LOOKING FORWARD
Following this weekend's bouts, the Soaring Eagles will challenge Buffalo State to a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday, January 12-13. Elmira begins the two-game set on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Buffalo, New York.
