ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A missed penalty kick in the 11th minute would come back to haunt the Elmira College men's soccer team, who suffered a 4-0 setback to visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute in non-league action on Tuesday evening. With the win, WPI extended its win streak to five games.

The Soaring Eagles had the first prime scoring opportunity of today's contest, as rookie Ryan Wallace '22 drew a penalty on WPI at the 10:54 mark of the opening half. Elmira's Cameron Sanderson '20 stepped up the 12-yard dot for the penalty kick, but his attempt was denied by WPI's Rufus Adams to keep the Purple and Gold off of the scoreboard.

Five minutes after the missed penalty kick, Luke Reiniger deposited the game-opening goal to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. The tally was the first of back-to-back goals by Reiniger, who scored once again in the 30th minute to double WPI's first-half lead.

WPI eventually took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break, as Matt Mulligan, who assisted on Reiniger's second tally of the evening, scored on a header in the 36th minute off of a service from Riley Doherty.

Elmira was unable to generate any offense in the second stanza, as WPI went on to outshoot EC, 11-0, which resulted in a fourth-and-final goal for the Engineers in the 62nd minute. Scoring for WPI was Tyler Melo, who toed in the ball from five yards in a scrum in front of the net.

WPI finished the contest with a 20-1 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in shots on goal. Corner-kick opportunities ended in favor of the Engineers as well, 6-0.

In His Own Words…
"Today was not even a shadow of ourselves in terms of work rate and will to win," said head coach Kevin Brenner. "I have full confidence the men will bounce back on Saturday evening."
